Runtime Error

I keep getting a runtime error. I get it everytime I try to click on My Computer. This is what it says Microfoft Visual C++ Runtime Runtime Error! Program:C:/windows/explorer.exe Sometimes when I am online it will say Program:C:/Programfiles/internetexplorer/iexplore.exe And then it says This application has requested runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact application support team. I don't know much about computers, let alone software. Please HELP!

Have you installed the Google Toolbar lately? If so uninstall it. If you don't have Google toolbar, the first step is to reboot the machine.
Next check to see if anti virus protection is updated and on, Same with spyware protection.
Next run Anti virus
Next run Antispyware

Thanks. I don't have a google toolbar. My antivirus is updated and appears to be running fine. I actually don't know if I have spyware, unless there is another name for it--is that a firewall? Anyway, my computer seems to be running fine again. Hopefully it won't happen again--although I don't have much confidence in that. I found a few websites that actually give me some pointers also--geeks to go.com, and support.microsoft.com.. Thanks. I need all the help I can get...

No, spyware is not a firewall. Spy ware is a name for different kinds of files, programs that are installed on your computer without your knowledge. Some spyware tracks the websites you visit to get a profile of your habits for marketing purposes. Some are harmless to the operation of your computer and some are not.

You need spyware protection. Google for "free spyware scan and removal". Be sure that the free scan doesn't just simply identify the spyware but also removes it.

You may not have any harmful spyware now, but you will if you visit the web often enough.

Spy ware is bad because its effect on a computer is not always predictable so it is best to just get rid of all of it.

Ain't technology wonderful!

Okay. Sounds good. One thing--is there something that you can install that will always block or do you have to just keep doing scan and remove on a frequent basis? I have a bunch of McAfee security, I wonder why I don't have that...

Me again. I looked into my McAfee and this is what I have--virus scan, firewall, privacy service, shredder and spamkiller.

I am not very familiar with MCAffee products except for their free stinger.exe, a stand alone virus remover, that removes the worst viruses.

You van set those programs to run themselves at certain times. BUT...you need to know how to update the virus definitions. New viruses are always coming out, and McAffee wants you to keep its definitions (specific virus killers) up to date.

Also, do you keep windows up to date/ Microsoft constantly puts out security patches and groups them as critical updates or not.

Post back if you need to. Did you download and run stinger.exe ?
