SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616E
I have been using this drive for about a year. One day, all of a sudden, it just stops working. When I go to my computer to manually make the CD/DVD play, doesn't matter, it says insert disk. What do I do it seems that quite a few people have been having this problem and DELL is not a very big HELP. Does ANYONE know what i can do to fix this or should i just replace the drive.
I have already reinstalled the software from the company directly and from the windows auto wizard.

Hi easjsp,
Dell does have a firmware update for this drive, consider giving it a try. Use the Drivers & Downloads link under the Product Support tab above.
Best Regards

Thank you for advice..Now that I've downloaded it everytime i try to use it .. it says flash file not opened!!
It won't let me use what i downloaded. I know this is probably easy stuff but i've never had to do this before and my other drive still works fine. How can i get this thing working or is it better to just by another one Thanks again>>>

Hi easjsp,
The directions here Samsung 616E drive mention needing Admin Rights enabled, some tend to miss this part.

Hi snowday !
Well my friend, I am a firm believer in your quote when it comes to firmware updates. I will apply one if I am having problems with the drive or the update adds a feature I need.
As for the date difference, Dell does not flash the drives, if a firmware is needed, Dell will add it to their file library for the Members to access. So until the manufacturer actually starts shipping the drives with the new update and they may not, the dates can be mis-leading.
Section 7-5 of the CD/RW link has a couple of nice free utilities for checking information on your system and hardware.

Hi Predator,
I am having the same problems and I have administrative rights but I still get the same result: 'flash file not opened'. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

I also am having the same problem with my Samaung DVD-ROM SD-616E drive.
Suddenly it just stops working. It doesn't recognize any CD or DVD that I try to read. It just says: "Insert disk into drive E".
I successfully updated the drive firmware from F501 to F502, but I still have the same problem. Has anybody found out what the solution to this problem is?
If not, would the best solution be for me to replace the drive with a new one of a different brand? If so, any recommended brands?
Thanks for your help.

Maryanne:
The instructions listed are as follows:
Download
1.Click Download Now, to download the file.
2.When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP
users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In:
window appears.
3.From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to
select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
icon appears on your desktop.
Install
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R86763.EXE.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86763. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86763 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
At what point does the process not work?

I am having this same problem. I tried downloading the suggested firmware and it I can't get it to run. When I click on the properties and the capatability there is no capatability for Windows xp.
When I try to extract the file, it won't extract.
Any suggestions on how people got this download to work?
Dell online support was not helpful. They told me since it was not a hardware issue I had to call a "fee based" queue and gave me a 866 number. Then they told me to restore the system to a prior date.

HI Osprey,
This time I got the download to actually download. Followed all your steps.
This doesn't fix my dvd drive. Drive does not work, I keep getting a message to insert a disc in my D drive. At least now, my computer doesn't crash like it used to.
Any suggestions?

I'm having a similar problem with this device.
In my case, I downloaded and installed R86763.EXE, and everything runs fine until I reboot. Once the system reboots, XP detects the "new hardware", and overwrites the driver with the Microsoft version (5.1.2535.0) which doesn't work. I try to "rollback driver", but it says there are no previous drivers to rollback to.
HELP!

Like the others in this thread have mentioned, the device driver reports everything as honky dorie, but it gives me the "insert disk" error whenever I try to read any disk in it.
I updated the firmware to version-2 with the DELL version, but noticed that the Samsung site is already up to firmware version-8. But the Samsung versions don't install on the computer.
