SATA Drive Problem

I am attempting to install a SATA DVD drive on a Dell 8400 running on Windows 8. I have downloaded and extracted the f6flpy3270 files that matches my Intel 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller.  The files are on a floppy.  My question is:  How do I install these files on my Windows 8 computer so I can access SATA drives 1 and 3?

Hi Jimwatkins2009,

Dimension 8400 has 4 SATA ports on the motherboard. If you are trying to connect a SATA DVD drive; you can connect it directly to the SATA port on the motherboard.

Ensure that SATA 1 and 3 are enabled to use the SATA 1 and 3.Restart the computer and tap F2 on Dell logo and BIOS screen comes up. Now under Drives, ensure they are enabled.

If the system has a floppy drive, use the floppy drive and copy the content on to the hard drive or you can install the files directly from the floppy.

Awaiting your response!

For Windows 8 what would be the best procedure to copy the drives from the floppy?

There is no executable to install the files.  How would you install them? They are;

iaahci.cat

iaahci.inf

iastor.cat

iastor.inf

iastor.sys

license.txt

readme.txt

txtsetup.oem

Hi Jimwatkins2009,

I'm trying to get some help on this but nothing yet.

The tricky part is that this is Windows 8. There are Windows 7 procedures for enabling AHCI/RAID without reinstalling the OS. You might want to try that. You would boot with the BIOS set to combined, run the registry edits, then reboot and enable RAID.

Here is one such procedure. You need to follow the "let me fix it myself" instructions.

I went in to registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV and value data box was already 0:  I did following:

Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV

In the pane on the right side, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.

In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.

I did the registry edit but still no good.  What would be the way with Win XP without having to re-install system?

What is the present SATA controller mode?  If you are already operating in AHCI, and your experience with modification of the registry suggests that you are, your OS already has the SATA driver that you have described in an earlier post.  You only need to load it one time; the drivers for the DVD and other drives are included in Windows.

The most common problem that presents the symptoms you report is that the SATA port you are trying to use has not been enabled in System Setup (the F2 key during a start of the system).  If you are certain that the port has been enabled, you might want to re-arrange the order.  Some Dell computers seem to insist that the lower numbered ports have hard disk drives rather than optical drives.  If you have more than one hard drive, try attaching the hard drives to the first and second SATA ports.  Plug the DVD into the 3rd port, or if you already have an optical drive you plan to keep, plug your existing optical drive into the 3rd port and your new DVD/CD drive into the fourth port.
