SATA HDD DETECTED AS ATA

hello

i just bought a vostro 1500 running with XP SP2
i boot it a few days ago, AHCI is enabled in the BIOS (i had to make a 2nd boot, 1st was with ATA enabled, sigh)
i used a cd from dell with sata drivers in it (if not, i couldnt have installed windows with AHCI enabled)
i updated the drivers then i used Sisoftware Sandra XII pro home (a pro soft that scan hardware and software) to check if everything was correct: my HDD is detected as (p)ATA, and not as S(erial)ATA (which makes a huge difference)

Now, i don't know what to do (the laptop is used for graph appz, working on huge files in order to make huge prints (1m²), that s one of the reason why i really need SATA...)

Could DELL have made a mistake installing ATA HDD instead of SATA?
could anyone please help me on this??

my laptop is vostro 1500 NB (N0115008)
authentic windows XP Pro SP2 (i got the cd from DELL)
Processor Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500
200 GB (7.200rpm) SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Protection
2048 Mo SDRAM DDR2 667 MHz
nVidia® GeForce®8600M GT 256 Mo
Intel® Pro/Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g modem included

the bios may send ata emulation in order to allow windows to be installed on the drive. It wouldn't affect the speed or performance of the drive.

Of course, you can always remove the hdd and verify it is sata. There are two screws that hold it in and it slides out after they are removed.

thanks for answering

AHCI is enabled in the BIOS (so that means ATA is disabled isnt it?)
Could AHCI be enabled in the bios if the HDD was (p)ATA??

Sisoftware Sandra is an internationally recognized and acclaimed software, that is what make me suspicious of the HDD itself.

Is there anyother option than opening the laptop to be sure that HDD is SATA?

check the device manager and check the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section. if you see something with SATA AHCI listed in there, then it's operating in AHCI mode...

ok, thanks for helping.

SATA/AHCI is in the device manager.
moreover, NCQ is enabled so HDD has to be a SATA.
thanks very much

My CD burner stops working so I'm looking for an internal or an external dvd burner (they burn cd too right?) but don't know how the compatibility issue work.  I've tried to research on it, supposedly an IDE interface cannot be use with a SATA?  Since I'm computer illiterate I only understand half of what I read.

Using the reference from the last post, I checked my device manager and it shows:
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Intel(R) 82801FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2653
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
(Does this mean I have a IDE interface and cannot use an SATA burner? since I don't know what I'm looking for or looking at I'm just throwing all the spec out there)

Here's the general spec of my laptop:
Dell Inspiron I6000
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz
798 MHz, 504 MB of RAM
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002

Does the ATA/SATA compatibility issue become a problem only when upgrading to an internal and not an external dvd burner? Or is it a problem in both cases?

I wanted to get the Samsung SH-S203B or Lite-On LH-20A1H since they get good reviews but I'm afraid they won't work on my laptop.

This is a cry for help =(

P.S.: I apologize if I unintentionally post on a categorically wrong thread.

looking at your computer spec, i dont think you can use SATA
internal or external is not a problem, some sata cables are 2m long...
but i dont think your motherboard manage sata at all...
IDE and SATA are different, u wont be able to connect a sata cable on an IDE port...
get an IDE dvd burner

if you are interested in understanding what is sata, look at this:

Thank you for respond.  Yes, I think I'll buy an IDE one just to be safe :]
