SM Bus Controller driver

Hey all!  I have a XPS420 and I've got the yellow exclamation point next to "SM Bus Controller" in my device manager.  I downloaded the chipset driver and installed it but the exclamation is still there.  Do I need a different driver?  ANY help would be much appreciated!

* Go to the XPS 420 drivers page
* Look for Chipset
* Reinstall the Intel Chipset driver. When done, restart the XPS 420

Double click on the SM Bus Controller with ? or !  (Assume it shows under Other devices?) go to details tab -> Change the drop down to Hardware ID - Post the info given below in the box. We can find the driver based on the info.

Hi Brettintherye,

The yellow exclamation point is an error, not a missing driver. Open the device to see what the error is.

it says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

I have the original cds that came with it.  Should I try those or is there a more up to date file online?  THANKS!

You need to install the Intel chipset driver.

I also tried "reinstall driver" but it couldn't find one online

I did.  I also noticed an improvement in performance after I did this but the error is still there...

Try this link

Uninstall the SmBus controller that shows ! mark - Choose scan for hardware changes and see. Try rebooting the computer after the installation.

Dear veejdeej

I have exactly the same problem with my new Vostro 3460 -

Looking into the error Hardware ID / Details I have the following:

   PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&SUBSYS_05631028&REV_04

   PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&SUBSYS_05631028

   PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&CC_0C0500

   PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&CC_0C05

Maybe there is also a magic fix for me ?

Dear veejdeej

You did it again ! :) !

I do not know how you do this but, yes, DriverId=C0G85 is not includedd in the list of drivers I've got for my Service Tag.

Now after I've installed it, "SM Bus Controller" is ok, but there is still one more problem with the "USB2.0-CRW"-

Looking into the error Hardware ID / Details I have the following:

  USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0129&REV_3960

  USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0129

Can you pleas try to see if you can find the missing driver for this one as well ?

(although you are not a Dell Employee, I think they should pay you for this great help )

Thanks

Yuval
