SMART Drive Error Codes

I have a GX150 and I'm in the process of replacing the 40Gg HD because I recently received the following message:

Dell's Disk Monitoring System has detected that drive 0 on primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisiable to immediately back up your data and replace your harddisk drive by calling your support desk or Dell Computer Corporation. F1 to continue or F2 to enter the setup.

I ran the DELL HD diagnostics and recieved a Failure Code # 4.

I was able to bring the machine up even though it is indicating a forthcoming failure. However, I plan to ghost the existing drive and copy the data to the new replacement drive ASAP.

Is there somewhere that the SMART errors are listed? It would be nice to know what exactly is failing with the drive.

Thanks

JGSmithJr,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

Can you tell us exactly what the error message reads.

Hi,

I have a DELL Dimension PC running Win XP. Since few weeks ago, before the system invokes WIN XP, it had shown an error message, "F1 to continue or F2 to enter the setup".  The error message now is even worse. It says

Does this mean my HD is going to DIE? I already back up my data. What should I do next? Is it under warrantee? Your advise is appreciated!!

I did have to replace the hard drive. It happened on more than one GX150 machine and I had to replace the drives on each. Since they are under warranty, you should have no trouble getting a replacement. Just be sure to get your data transferred over. In my case, I simply cloned the drives and have been fine ever since.

It is my undersanding that there may have been a bad batch of drives that shipped around the time I recieved the GX150s but I cannot confirm that to be the case.

Hope this helps.

At the Dell screen during boot, press Ctrl + Alt + D and run diags. this will give you a pass or fail code. Then call Dell Support.
