I got an optiplex GX260 in April.  Replaced the HD in April, Replaced the HD in June, Replaced it on July 10th and on JJuly 13th got the same message.  Fought until I got a system exchange and within 24 hours of turning it on I get the same message "Smart Detection System" Back up PC Relace HD.

Somthing is not right here!

Rlar7,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Smart errors can be false errors just like any other diagnostic
tool. Smart scanning software was originally developed for SCSI
devices, not IDE devices. Sometimes you may get a false error.
If you get a smart error, run the Dell 9090 HD diagnostics to
get a second opinion. You may also want to run other 3rd party
diagnostic programs as well. You can try removing and reseating
your IDE cables, and also resetting your bios defaults.

Dear Karell:

After 3 months of frustration,  4 hard drives, and a replacement system I finally ended up with a Tech support guy from Texas.  I had run all the tests which the hard drive passed and he had me run dos chkdsk and another program ( I'm not sure what it's called) we also went through everything connected to my PC to make sure all was well there and to my amazement it's been 2 solid days without error messages.

My point is, yes immediately back up your data so you don't lose it, but that message does not always mean your HD is crashing.

Thanks for your input.

Is Dell 9090 HD diagnostics the same as "Diagnostics: Dell 32 Bit Diagnostics (Graphical User Interface version), Diagnostics, English, Multi System, A1220"?

Is there a version that runs on NTFS rather than FAT?

Is there anything special about using the Dell diagnostics on a Dell machine, or can I use any HD diagnostics utility? Does it do any more than chkdsk?
