Safe to delete Media Direct Partition?
I'm using gParted to alter my Inspiron 1720 drive. I've shunk the primary partition, deleted the restore partiton, and created a new partiton.
I would like to add one more partition to the drive, but with Media Direct my limit of partitions has been met.
Is it safe to delete the Media Direct partition? I'm not planning on doing a clean install from scratch. The initial install wasn't that bloated with poo. I thought I read somewhere that deleting this partition screws up something in the MBR. Sounded somewhat hokey, but I thought I would check first.
Will I lose any functionality within Vista if I delete this Media Direct partition. I doubt it.
Thanks,
Craig

The only functionality you will lose is the use of the media buttons across the front of laptop.
You can delete this partition but should you by accident hit the media direct button afterwards,it will render your laptop unresponsive in a loop.

You sure about this? Media Direct allows you to play movies and music without having to boot into the OS.
I would think as long as I had the software / drivers installed on the OS installed the keys would work within Vista, regardless of the partition being there.

I'm pretty sure the media buttons are in the chipset driver and not Media Direct.
I am pretty sure Windows Media Player and WINDVD work with the media buttons without media direct installed.
However if you press the media direct button by mistake when powered down it will give you problems.

It's safe to delete the partition. No functionality other than the booting directly to MediaDirect will be lost.
(i.e. don't press the mediadirect button when your laptop is powered off.)

Argh. I wussed out. gParted wouldn't let me delete the whole partition, so I decided to leave well enough alone. It would have been hice, but honestly I'll be ok with what I have now. Removing the restore partition gave me what I mainly needed.
Thanks for the info though.
