Samsung SM-348 CD-RW/DVD ROM

This OEM combo burner in my Dimension 4600 reads and writes to CD's with no problem, but does not see any unformatted DVD+RW or DVD-R media, although the information I've tracked down about the burner states that it accepts both.  Any ideas?  Many thanks!

Hey Gordon, you been talking to Deb ? lol

Hope you had a good T-day, we are getting a little snow, nothing much though.
Did you fight the crowds for the "biggest shopping day of the year"?
We did not.
Take care,
Jeff

Jeff,  Thanks very much for your tip.  I had already downloaded the firmware update, but just did so again and once again the update seemed to install correctly in DOS from the bootable floppy, but the problem remains -- the Roxio software version 6.0 continues to tell me that there is no disc in the drive when I insert either an unformatted DVD+RW or DVD-R.  I am sorry to impose on your generosity, but if you have any other suggestions I would be grateful.  Thanks,  Tim.

I don’t understand what you are expecting from your drive???

It is a DVD-ROM drive that can read DVD media. It has no ability to write to any DVD media, so what do you expect it to do with blank media?

Hi Tim,
My apologies, I may have mislead you totally, I assumed we were talking about reading the discs rather burning DVD disc. If it is burning DVD media, then Jim hit the nail on the head and I simply missed it. If it is reading previously written DVD +/-R/W media, then make sure that DMA is enabled for the drive, Sometimes flashing a drive will drop it down into PIO mode. Section 15, articles 13 & 14 of the CD/RW link in my post.

Best Regards

Hi Jeff,

Yes, Jim hit the nail on the head in a very demeaning, sardonic manner.  I confess that I am ignorant enough to have thought the drive was designed to write to DVD's as well as CD's, and your assistance in educating me was gracious and much appreciated.  Thanks again,

Tim

Tim: My question was not intended to offend but to get some clarifying information. With optical media there are several ways to write with variations within each one. Likewise there can be problems reading the media with some of these methods.

I took the time to re-read all the posts in your thread, go to a search site to find that drive and look at its’ specification then come back here and post. If I wanted to be sarcastic I wouldn’t bother with going to that much trouble to help you… Sorry you mistook my response.
