Serial Number for WinDVD; ResourceCD Driver

Win98SE, Dimension XPS-T850r, NEC DV-5700A

In working with my SoundBlaster Live 512 trouble, I discovered that my system says my DVD decoder software is not found. I tried running the WinDVD driver installation software. It asks for a serial number. I have a photocopy of the label from the DVD. The software says the serial number is not a valid number. Because the O's and 0's are difficult or impossible to distinguish in the font used on the label, I tried all the different permutations -- with the same result. Is there a trick?

Also, I do not see an NEC driver on the ResourceCD.

- It asks for a serial number.

Try uninstalling the WinDVD software via Add/Remove Programs before installing it again. Also, it is unlikely that the letter O would be used in conjunction with the number 0 in a serial number, as this would lead to confusion. The number 0 on that label should have a diagonal line running from the upper right to the lower left in all cases where that character is indeed a 0.

- Also, I do not see an NEC driver on the ResourceCD.

This is normal. There is no specific driver for this drive, as the drive's basic functions are handled natively by the operating system.

I refreshed the DVD software via Control Panel>System and rebooted, but still get the decoder error message. However, my SoundBlaster Live 512 now works again -- mostly. Should I continue on your recommended course in light of this change, or should I do something else?

All SoundBlaster problems are resolved. However, after I removed WinDVD via Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs and tried to re-install WinDVD, I get an invalid serial number error message. Is the number for the DVD drive or the software? If it is for the software, where do I find the serial number? (I cannot find it anywhere in the documentation that came with the computer.)

The serial number for WinDVD is located on the sleeve that the Intervideo WinDVD software CD was shipped in. An image of this sleeve, including the holographic label that has the applicable serial number printed on it, can be found in this article <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> at the bottom.

Fixed. (I thought I had all my sleeves in one place. But when I saw the image, I realized I had more searching to do. It worked without a hitch.) Thank you.
