Sony DDU1612 DVD Rom Drive
This Sony DVD Rom drive is farely new. It replaced a NEC DVD Rom that came with my 8100 . I went to use the drive and the drive won't read any disc It spins lites up but wont read anything. I check everything and deleted and reinstalled windows driver. I can't believe that I have experienced 2 defective drives already. This drive is the primary drive and the CDRW is the slave. Any help would be appreciated. I serched for a possible firmware update, but can't seem to find anything

You won't find an update for this because it's an OEM unit. I have the same drive but it's always worked great. You can try making the CDRW the primary and the DVD the secondary. Next try clearing the nvram (reflashing the bios). Make sure you uninstall the drive (through the device manager) before clearing the nvram, letting windows find and install the drive upon reboot. These two steps should put you in business. Here is a link for instructions on clearing the nvram.
Good luck, NFFAA
