Swapping SATA Hard Drives

My 8300 died about a week ago, so I order a 9100. Problem is I have documents on the 8300 I would like to recover. I tried switching the hard drives, but the
9100 would not boot, just an error screen.

What I'd like to know is; can I hook up the 8300 hard drive as a second hard drive on the 9100 and move the files from the 8300 drive to the 9100 drive? Both of these drives are SATA drives.

You can try it, and it may work. If the drive is failing, however, and that was the reason for the problems, you may or may not be able to read all the data on the drive.

Actually I just did the same with Dimension 4600. When my orginal hard drive failed, I got a new one from Dell and it was installed as Master drive. Once all OS was loaded, I added the failed one as (2nd /slave) drive. I manually copied many of the files. Some folders and files were corrupted and couldnot be salvaged. But, I thnk it is worth a try. .

I recently replaced my failed hard drive and all is up and running well.  I now want to take my failed drive and slave to the new SATA boot drive (primary).  I have a 4600.  I am new to opening computer covers and doing anything inside.  Does anyone have specific documentation on how to hook up the slave drive?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you all for the replies. I'm going to order a new power supply and install it. I will post back and let you know how things turn out.

It's really simple to add a 2nd drive. (Below applies to U-ATA drive connection).

First power down the PC and disconnect the power cord. There is a lever toward the left side (looking from the front of PC) on the back side of the tower. Press the the lever with one hand, and using the two indentations on the left side panel pull the panel towards back of the PC case by the other hand. Slide further and lift out the panel.

Prepare the hard drive jumper setting on the back of the hard drive. Set the jumper to CS (Cable Select).

Turn and lay the case on the side, with the open side on the top. Mount the 2nd drive in the u-shaped drive enclosure with at least two mounting screws (one on the top, one on side). You may have to buy the mounting enclosure if you do not have one. Mount the drive enclosure to the rear of the first hard drive and secure it with two mounting screws (one on  the bottom to the case, and one on the left side of the inside panel of the case). Now attach a power supply connector (typically white colored) to the back of the hard drive. Next, connect the middle connector on the ribbon cable to the recipient connector on the back side of the hard drive.

If there is a CD that comes with the drive, you can install the drive following the instruction on the CD. if not, when you boot the PC, BIOS will identify the 2nd drive. If the drive is badly damaged you will not be bale to access the drive (files). For mnior damage, you may be able to access some files which are intact and copy it to the primary drive........Good luck.

I'd like to thank all those who responded? I got the new power supply and installed it, now my 8300 is back up and running.
