Switching HDs Need Help!
i just custom built my own pc and my step-dad wants the old one we wanted to know if we would run into any problems (besides cables) that we might run into by taking the hd out of his existing pc and puting it in the other one
my questions
would the os from his old pc mess up with the change in hardware and could that be fixed?
would we have to get a new os?
would we have to format the hd?
would we have to install the os that was on the pc that we are putting the hd into?

Yes, you would create problems. The hard drive has motherboard and hardware specific drivers. So when you take the other hard drive with XP into yours, you are having incorrect drivers.
One way to do this would be to leave your hard drive with XP in your old system and install the hard drive from the other system as a second drive. Then give this to your step dad.
Then in your new system start with a new empty drive (your step dad may buy) and install XP of the system you are discarding. So you are still using your two existing licences.
The other (harder) way is to install your step dad's hard drive and fight all the problems with drivers until all works.
