Switching from PIO Mode To DMA Mode...

i'm presently trying to get into video editing, and one of the advice that was given to me was to switch the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers from PIO to DMA Mode. so i checked my device manager and on my secondary IDE channel, both Current transfer mode were set to Ultra DMA Mode 2., while on my primary IDE controller, device 0 is set to Ultra DMA Mode 2, and device 1 is set at PIO Mode even though the transfer mode box says "DMA if available". i tried the following to change it to DMA:

1) i changed the option from DMA if available to PIO only, then OK. repeated the process and switched it back to DMA if available. didn't do anything..

2) uninstalled the hdd and reinstalled. still on PIO mode (device 1)

3) repeat step 1 and rebooted. nothing happened.

4) pulled out my resource cd and clicked on CMA(?), then clicked on PIO-DMA. this time device 1 actually changed to Ultra DMA Mode 2!

here's were the problem lies. between last night and this morning, it switched back PIO Mode. i did turned the pc off before going to bed, so i'm assuming that when i rebooted the pc this morning, it changed back to PIO mode. my question is how do i change it from PIO Mode to DMA Mode and for it to stay in that state indefinitely, even when i reboot the pc?

thx in advance...

Make sure you don't have the option to turn off your hard drives enabled in the power-saving mode.  There's some kind of issue there where, if the drive is 'asleep' when you try to access it, the delay is interpeted as a bad connection and the drive reverts to PIO.
