System Not recognising OS

Hi guys,

I recently tried to install Linux Puppy on my Dell Studio XPS 16. It worked really well and the new OS is working nicely BUT the system is now no longer recognising the Windows Vista (yes I know....) OS and is failing to boot.

I have run diagnositics and received the error code 2000-042 which I understand to be a hard disc error yet when I fire up Puppy I can read my C:\ drive and view all files so I know that the Hard Disc itself (as a piece of hardware) is fine.

I suspect that I have managed to fry the driver (somehow) and now the boot system cannot run but I am more than willing to accept that I am wrong in this deduction.

What do I do?

Thanks

Morgan

Would it be worth copying all the data off the disk and reformatting the thing?

I've also considered reinstalling Windows 7 and seeing if that works.

You need a new, 2.5" 9.5 mm or slimmer SATA notebook drive.

Just because the drive can be read (for now) doesn't mean it's operationally OK.  While Linux can read the drive, it's very possible there are bad or marginal blocks in the Windows boot sector - which would easily account for Windows not loading.

Honestly I'm not 100% sure that the error is 2000-0142 but I'm pretty sure. Will double check when I get home. I'm currently a student on holiday about to get a new laptop so a coverup would be a good solution.

If you're seeing a 2000-0142 error, the hard drive is bad.  You may get a clean install to work, but likely not for long.  The drive is clearly on its way out - do this only if you have several hours to spend on a coverup that will only work temporarily.

Error 0146 indicates a failed, or failing hard drive.   This means your hard drive will need to be replaced.

There are just three manufacturers of notebook drives - WD, Toshiba and Seagate.  Choose from the first two.
