System not recognizing the CD Drive - GX280

I guess I'm lost - and need some help!

I tried to reinstall Windows XP Prof. SP2 on my Optiplex GX280. But I have the problem, that my internal CD Rom drive is not working at all.

When I insert a CD the drive is blinking during the first seconds - but that's all.

In the BIOS the drive should be visible under PATA-0 but it's not detected. (PATA-0 is active)

I changed the CD drive with a drive I know that it's working - but the same result. I tested with another CD drive and cable - which are working fine in another Optiplex - but in this one - no chance.

When I press F12 during the startup - I get the option: "Onboard or USB CD-Rom Drive" in the Boot Device Menu - but it's not reading / starting from any bootable CDs.

When I start XP and start the explorer - the drive is visible e.g. drive E: - but when I insert a CD and click on the icon for this drive I get the following message: "Please insert a disk into drive E:." That's all... No CDs are detected...

...even if I use the other cable and CD rom drive - where I know that it should work - the result is exactly the same.

It's not possible to run the diagnostic tool - the CD will not boot...

I guess I'm lost...

What else can I do? Thanks for any ideas which could help...

Is it set to the primary slave drive or is it set to the secondary ?

iByte01,

The Diagnostics may be on your hard drive.  Check this by pressing
F12 at startup while the blue Dell is on the screen.  This will take
you to the boot menu where the Utility Partition or Diagnostics may be
a choice.  If so, run the Custom Test for the drive and have a data CD
(not music CD) ready for the read test.

Tell us what form you have .................

Skybird,

There's a "Boot to Utility Partition" option available - but when I choose it the following message appears: "Utility Partition not available".   --> How can I install it?

The other option "Hard Drive Diagnostics" is listing the cd-rom drive as DRIVE 2 but with the comment "Diagnostics not supported"

That's it...

In the Device Manager, when you right-click the drive and select
Properties, is there an error (number)?

In the Device Manager, Uinstall the IDE Controller and reboot to
do a fresh install of it.

Again, tell us what form you have .................

In the Device Manager I get the message that the drive is working properly.

I also did the uninstall & reboot - but the result is still the same...

I guess that it's not an OS or a driver problem - Normally it should be possible to boot from a bootable CD directly when the PC is starting up - but that`s not possible.

Is it possible to install the diagnostics on the HDD, to have it available in the F12 menu at the startup? --> Maybe that this result could bring us one step further...

dang73,

it's a Samsung CD-Master 24E drive - Model SN-124 (SlimLine) - there are no Jumpers available. I already did a check with a CD-ROM drive & cable out of another Optiplex PC where I'm sure that the drive is working properly... - but as soon as it's installed in my PC - the result is the same as with the other drive ... it's not reading any CDs.
