Just to confirm a few basics, check drive properties and make sure DLA is not running. If you see a DLA tab, you may want to uninstall DLA completely. After that, make sure the Recording tab shows CD recording is enabled. Then see if the Windows CD burning wizard works.
I have a new XPS 400 with XP-MCE. It was shipped from Dell with a TSST TS-H292C CD-RW drive, a HLDT-ST GSA-H21N DVD+/-RW drive and Roxio software.
The drives read disks created by other systems, so the basic hardware and drivers work.
When I attempted to burn a cd with some data files, the CD-RW drive recognized a new Memorex CD-RW disk and Roxio went through the steps of staging the files and then writing them to disk. When I attempted to read the disk back, it could not be recognized. A "system hang" occurs when the drive fails to open the disk and goes into an infinite search for whatever it needs to complete the step. I removed the disk after rebootiing the system and tried it in another PC. It could not be recognized, so the format was hosed.
The default drive configuration had LDA turned off, so I tried turning it on and formatting another new CD before attempting a write. It spent about 20 minutes and finished with a message "format failed..." It is not readable in any fashion. Attempting to access it will cause a system hang.
I haven't tried getting help from Dell support yet as they are working on two other problems I have.
Please post any helpful info to this message thread and I'll be grateful for the help.
This sounds like the same problem I am having. I had one Dell Tech download a free version of NERO for me and my system works fine. I am still trying to figure out why I can not use Roxio or Windows to burn data. I was hoping someone from this message board would be able to help. I will take any suggestions.
Thanks for your input. I have tried all brands of CD's / & DVD's and none of them will work using Roxio. As soon as I use Nero, everything seems fine. Iv'e tried uninstalling & re-installing roxio, even tried formatting my hard drive, re-installing windows then re-installing Roxio with the same results. Dell has sent me 4 different computers, they all react the same way. They are still trying to solve the problem. The drive in my computer is TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H553A. The second I use Nero problem is solved. The problem is the computer comes with Roxio, Dell will not install Nero for free to solve the problem. Instead they want to try and figure out why Roxio keeps getting a NOT RESPONDING alarms.
I will take any advise to try and get this probem fixed. If Dell Tech support figures it out 1st I will post the results.

If Nero is working and Roxio is not, then that would appear to be your issue. I don't have experience with Roxio. I have used Nero exclusively for years. If you want an affordable alternative that will do 95% of what you need, Google a program called Nero Essentials 7.0. Usually runs about $5.

This is just checking the drive itself.
