What operating system are you using?
If you're using XP then just boot from the XP CD and setup will allow you to repartition and format your hard drive.

I have windows 2000 pro.  I am using an Inspiron 8000.   I wish I could use a cd-rom.

why do you wish you could use a cdrom?
the win2k cd should bootable.
setup will allow you to do the same as with xp.

go into bios & change the boot order so that cdrom is first in the list.
put the win2k cd in the drive & reboot.
the system will boot from the cd & enter setup. From in there you can repartition & format the disk before installing the OS.

No go, I bring the dell diagnostics.  Thank you, for the idea, but I am still unable to format my hard drive.
