Two DVD/CD-ROM drives not functioning on Dimension 5000

Hello,

Turned on my Dell Dimension 5000 this morning and it took an age to boot up. Once in Windows XP I noticed that my two CD/DVD-Rom drives [HL-DT-ST and Phillips] were not appearing in windows explorer. I checked out their status in Device manager/properties and  got the message that the drivers could not be loaded for these devices.

I downloaded the driver for the Phillips DVD drive [couldn't find the other one] but when I tired to run it I got the message "Device could not be found".

I then uninstalled both drives and rebooted Windows. Windows discovered the devices but displayed a message for both of them saying: these drives are not compatible with this platform [or something to that effect].

I then looked for help on this forum and found some information about chaning the lower and upper filters in the Registry. I did this but after another reboot I got the same error.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this problem would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Hi Vozzer,

Enter the BIOS and verify that the IDE channel is set to Auto and that both drives are "On".
If this is correct, then consider Clearing the NVRAM. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 11, article 2 for the instructions.
If this does not help, then you need to test the drives separately on the IDE channel. Go to Device Manager, select each drive and click Uninstall, shutdown. Open the case and disconnect the drive in the second bay / middle connection on the IDE Cable, I personally like disconnecting the power cable as well.
Boot the system, what happens?

Best Regards

Hi Vozzer,

Well my friend, the Code 39 error is related to the Upper & Lower Filters and the majority of the time, the Dell article I have listed in Section 12, article 10 of the CD/RW site corrects it.
Also Section 20, article 3 has helped as well, strange...

Best Regards

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately haven't been able to resolve the problem. Was unsure how to clear the NVRAM [even with the instructions] but I did go into system setup and went to the maintenance section where I chose the option to restore the factory settings. I also tried a system restore. Still getting the same Error Code 39 - driver not suited to this platform. Will try the IDE test on each drive later.

Hi Vozzer,

We have seen this problem since XP was first introduced. Both Dell and Microsoft need to update their articles to include almost any third party burning program. We have seen it with Roxio, Nero, MusicMatch, iTunes, Alochol, etc... (some I cannot mention here..)

Best Regards

I see in your notes it says:  "Once you have completed these steps, check for other CurrentControlSet folders in the registry that may be titled CurrentControlSet001, CurrentControlSet002, CurrentControlSet003, and so on. If these folders exist, you need to follow this procedure for each CurrentControlSet folder to clear the upper and lower filters."

I didn't look out for this.

Also I use Nero Burning Software not Roxio - does this make a difference?

Ok then - I followed the instructions regarding the LowerFilter settings and rebooted but it didn't work.

Also I'm seeing another issue now: each time I reboot the OS sees the DVD/CD ROM drives and attempts to install them. In the middle of this I get a message saying it needs to copy files from the WinXP disc and asks me to select a the CD location. However this won't work since the CD drives are not visible.

I also tried a system recovery but this fails saying it can't copy the msfs.sys file.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Vozzer,

At this point if you have not done so already, test each drive separately on the IDE cable as I mentioned before.
One "bad" drive can effect the other drive when on the same cable, not always but at times.

Hello Predator,

Well I finally managed to resolve the issue last night. I think it was a combination of uninstalling Nero, editing the Lower Filters in all Control sets, and running Chkdsk /p [which found problems and resolved them]. Everything's working fine now.

Thanks for your help!! Much appreciated.
