Unable to set dma mode on slave CD ROM Drive

Running two drives, one a CD RW and the other a DVD RW.  In Secondary IDE Channel Properties, Device 0 (the master drive) shows Current Transfer Mode as Ultra DMA Mode 2.  Device 1 shows Current Transfer Mode as PIO Mode, though DMA if available is selected as the preferred transfer mode.  I have tried all solutions I found by googling:  I uninstalled both drives and rebooted, deleted appropriate keys in the registry, uninstalled the IDE channel and rebooted, and even swapped the physical drives between slave and master.  The second drive (slave) remains in PIO mode and it burns and rips rather slowly.  I would greatly appreciate any suggestions how I can get the second drive to run in DMA mode.  Computer is a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP Home.  Thanks in advance.

Hi, Omcnew: There are two things that come to mind. First, are both drive's jumpers set to cable select? This is the default configuration for Dell IDE drives. Second, are both drives recognized in the BIOS. It might be necessary to reset BIOS defaults. If both of those settings are good, then post the model number of both drives. Tags: 3000 PIO

Bingo!  Turning on second drive in the BIOS did it.  For some reason the BIOS now shows "unknown device" instead of "CD ROM Drive" but it now shows running in DMA Mode 2, same as the master.  Thank you VERY much, osprey4.
