Unmountable_Boot_Volume

Hi all,

I got the BSOD (UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME) on a co-workers Latitude D610 running Windows XP. Did some searching and decided to do a chkdsk /r procedure. I started the procedure at 9:30 AM on 11/5/07 and when I left work that evening at 4:30 PM, it showed 59% completed. Came in to work at 8:00 AM the next day, and it was at 74% completed. At 9:00 am, it reversed course and is showing 50% completed and has been stuck there for 1 1/2 hours and counting! I'm pretty sure that the drive has failed but would like a second or third opinion. Should I keep it running? I can hear some clicking from the drive, so it is doing something. Please let me know.

Thanks,

OK, so how do I cancel the chkdsk /r? Do i just hold the power button for five seconds or is there a better way?

Have you run the Dell diagnostics on the drive (F12 at boot)? If not, power up, press F12, load the diagnostics and run an extended test of the drive.

Try the escape key and give it a couple of minutes to stop.

OK, I had to hold power button to stop the chkdsk /r test. Ran diagnostics and DST Short Status Test failed. It shows error code 100-0146, Msg: Unit 0 : IDE status failed. Status byte = 64 ControlCode = 1 Msg=No additional sense information. Sounds like hard drive failure. Thanks for your help. Any idea where I should look to find a new hard drive?

newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com are two good sources. You need a parallel ATA (AKA EIDE/ATA6 or lower/ATA133 or lower) drive, 120G or smaller, 2.5", 9.5 mm.

Serial ATA drives (SATA or ATA150 or ATA-7) won't work.

So chkdsk /r did not work? Phooey...

Try running the custom test on the hard drive, all the tests that is. Or run the symptom tree test for blue screen. Take note of all the error codes then.

Ordered a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 Ultra ATA/100 80-GB Hard Drive from newegg for 59.99. Should be here tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
