If CD burning programs are not seeing the drives, try uninstalling the drives in the Windows Device Manager, then restart Windows and watch that both drives are detected and reinstalled.  Many times that will take care of flakey drive problems.

If you plan on using the Sonic DLA (UDF formatting program so you can "drag and drop" files to the CD), you cannot also have the Nero InCd installed.  Only one UDF program can be installed at one time, as more than one will conflict and cause CD burning problems.

If you want to back up files to a CD-R or RW, you must first format the CD with the UDF program (e.g. DLA) before you can write files to it.

One other comment, do not have your "only copy" of data on an RW disc.  They are known to be unreliable and can either lose data or format.  Also have the data on some other "safe" backup such as a CD-R disc.  I personally only use CD-R discs, because of being burned by RW discs and if it is important enough to backup, the inexpensive CD-R's are worth the cost.  Before I got a DVD burner, I would backup up to CD-R's about once a month with the "make a data CD" function, not the UDF drag and drop  (I would back up the MY Documents folder, any other personal user data, Internet Explorer favorites, Outlook Account setup and any e-mail folders that I wanted to save).  This usually went on one or two CD-R's.  Even if the CD-R's are not bought in bulk and on-sale, it's still cheap and safe backup.  Now that I have a DVD burner I use a DVD+R disc, but I still consider the price of the DVD+R as cheap insurance.

Any suggestions re: SONIC - RecordNow (vs) NERO-5 Burning ROM - Sounds like I need to remove one of them!  Or is the SONIC set for the DVD+R/RW task?

I understand the "do not bet on RW" idea - I mostly use it for a fast backup of my QUICKEN data - using several different file names and overwriting them about once each week (but backing up perhaps 3-4 times per week - whenever I use the program).  Have also thought about using a THUMB DRIVE (64mb) it place of the CD-RW.  Will probably use the RWs until they are gone - I have 4-5 remaining.

I have not been able to FORMAT - when I hit that option - nothing happens! Will try to delete the drives and XP-Pro find them again (should work - right?).

(Sorry - first experiences with XP and a bit nervous!)

Roxio's D2D (aka DCD) is the only packet writer that works with CD-R media. All other will only work with CD-RW media. As Fireberd mentioned, you can only have one packet writer, pick InCD or DLA and remove the other.

Quicken can no longer be backed up to an optical drive from within the Quicken program. Of course you can copy files outside of the program…

Hopefully your drive will be recognized by the procedure Fireberd suggested.

From a Private Message: " Jim,
I still use Quicken '99 and it does all I need so I do not plan to stop! That will backup to thumb drive or CD-RW (I have done both on older machine!)
Thanks for the info! Any preference of SONIC or NERO?
Thanks
Keith

Then yes, it will work until you upgrade Quicken.

My choice? Roxio, been using it since V3 through V7 and am hoping to beta test V8.

Fireberd and others,

You hit the problem - NERO vs SONIC.  Finally decided to REMOVE and INSTALL the SONIC - that told me NERO was in the way -- tried to remove NERO and it complained about SONIC!  After about an hour - got them both off the system (may strange errors) - then REINSTALLED SONIC and all is well!  Wrote a 79 min audio CD-R in less than 4 minutes!!  AMAZING!

Thanks all for the advice - have bookmarked this forum (I am sure I will do something stupid again real soon!)
