You need to burn an ISO. The version of Roxio on your system does not have that feature - you have to upgrade it for that (big surprise).

You can use CD Burner XP Pro, which is great and free: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Alright I burned it as an ISO, but now what? I double click on it, and Roxio opens again. The name of the file on the DVD is VISTA_56 and it says it is an ISO read-only.

The confusing thing is that you don't want to end up with a .ISO file on the DVD. Instead you want to end up with a normal Vista install DVD with a bunch of individual files. A good analogy is that you don't want a .zip file on the DVD, you want the contents of the .zip file expanded onto the DVD. I used Nero, which came with an optical drive on a non-Dell computer. Its option to expand the .ISO image wasn't intuitively obvious either, but it was something like "burn ISO to DVD".

40 day free. install. There is going to be an option to burn ISO to DVD. It works. I use it at work.
I use Alcochol 120 home. ---------The best

I hope you are not installing VISTA as your only OS. I have Problems with allot of programs not compatible with Vista.

BEWARE!!! I did the vista thing. It was awesome and sweet. I loved (notice past tense) it. It ran great with MOST of my programs..not virtual drive 10 and a few others. My biggest problem was my gaming experience. My XPS rocked until I put Vista on it. Then I had hang time in my games and glitches that wouldnt go away. I decided to go back to XP but it is not that easy because of the boot sequence of Vista. You have to install XP all over again from scratch. It stunk but I am just getting up and running again after downloading plenty of drivers (new install cleared everything) and all my other data. I am excited for Vista but it still seems unstable with SOME software. Some programs are great but others cause it to crash. If you're not gaming it should run pretty good.

Question: Anyone else have the same problem with Gaming and Vista? Maybe I needed to install or upgrade some drivers? I installed Vista upgrade not clean install.

Thanks

BTW If your machine is powerful enough you can run Vista under MS VirtualPC. Then it installs and runs in its own environment and won't muck up operation of your other OS. Of course, this will slow down both operating systems because you'll be running XP at the same time the virtual Vista environment runs. Vista runs fine for me this way, but I've got an older 256MB video card and don't get the fancy new Vista translucent windows. I have 2GB RAM and Core 2 Duo E6600.

Yeah, I'd never burned an ISO image before either so I wasted discs too. It's easy, though, once you've located software that has that ISO option.

Thats an ugly problem.

I got the ISO burned now, and am wondering this:

If I get another HDD, could I just use it for Vista and not have to worry then so much about other files getting messed up?

You can install Vista RC1 to another HD or another partition on an HD.  I created a second partition on my C: drive and installed Vista there.  You end up with a dual boot system so you can run Vista or XP.

I didn't like the way Vista made itself the default OS, or the 3 seconds it gives you to choose.  I used VistaBootPro to edit the boot menu, making XP the default OS and giving me 30 secs. to choose.

Thanks! I think I'll look for a cheap harddrive for vista.

I've bid on a cheap 120gb SATA drive (1.5gb/s) on ebay. If I win I'll pay $30 total including S/H

I figure that is a good deal, even though it is a little old. This would be my 'test drive' for vista, linux etc...

If you don't get it, here's a new Hitachi 160GB SATA for $35 including shipping.  Of course there's a rebate.
