WD400 Caviar replacement for Model: WD400BB - 22FJA0 dated 12 June 2004
My Western Digital WD400 Enhanced IDE Caviar
LBA 78165360
40.0 GB
MDL: WD400BB - 22FJA0
DATE: 12 JUN 2004
DCM: HSBHCTJCH
is giving pretty clear signs that it will, one day, give up the ghost.
I have read this forum for some time and remember ZipZoomFly as well as New Egg (but may be going to a local store instead). Folks have expressed strong opinions about brand(s) to avoid and the issue about warranty from Manufacture (not sell) date. The computer has 1 GB RAM (I like) and runs Windows XP (Home, I believe) so I am thinking something less than 140 GB and would appreciate highly recommended ones. Should I go for 160 GB ?
400 GB ?
500 GB ?
This is a sort of small form factor (not mid-tower) and I have been running it horizontal. In fact, it has been sitting on top of my previous tower, tight up underneath the pull out keyboard shelf.

As you mentioned, there are a lot of opinions about brands for harddrives.
Personally I'd recommend a drive that the manufacturer shows some faith in the product for by offering a decent warranty; in other words 3 or more years of warranty. My preference is Seagate, as they offer 5 years on all internal (retail) drives. Hitachi offers 3 years on most/all their retail drives. Western Digital's warranty depends on the drive model. Maxtor offers just 1 year on any drive.

Both are 7200 RPM so am I going to have heat problems to be replacing a 5400 RPM drive of 40 GB capacity with the faster spinning one?
