What Hard Drive for Dimension 2400

What Hard Drive for Dimension 2400 ^Detailed info provided^

Hi I still have the 40 Gb hard drive that came with the Dimension 2400, however I have upgraded RAM to 1Gb and video card to Fx5200. I read around and there seem to be a lot of things to consider such as different types of hard disks and maybe I am short on power supply and that the Dimension 2400 only has one power source for hard disk. There is a lot more than that as well it seems.
Below are some information from Belarc advisor

Maxtor 6E040L0 [Hard drive] (41.11 GB) -- drive 0, s/n E1MAJ2LE, rev NAR61590, SMART Status: Healthy

c: (NTFS on drive 0) 26.21 GB 734 MB free
d: (NTFS on drive 0) 14.85 GB 803 MB free

Controllers

Intel(R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB
Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]

I hope you professional guys can help me on this. A hard disk of around 100 Gb would be great.
Thanks a lot in advance.

The D-2400 has either a 200watt or a 250watt power supply, both should  be able to handle the larger EIDE hard drive without a problem.   Any brand of EIDE hard drive should be fine, except a Maxtor, that seems to be having some reliability problems.

Thank you for the fast reply. May I ask, as I have seen else where, the case of space limit of around 137GB (something like that) for my d-2400 ?

If you are using XP SP1 or SP2, there should be no limits.  If you purchased a hard drive tray, you could also install a second drive, the case has the space, but lacks the tray by default.

Will this tray work hxxp://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=froogle16&prodID=960463

with this hard drive
http://froogle.google.co.uk/froogle_cluster?q=EIDE&pid=1942711015598855891&oid=9340057475973466557&btnG=Search+Froogle&scoring=p

I heard the Western Digital hard drives have problems, is that significant?

Also, do you think it is worth the bother to buy the tray so that I could keep my old 40 GB hard disk or would it be possible to just move the data using norton ghost? (or does that need the old hard disk still there anyway, I just realised)

The tray shown, will not work in a D-2400.  The hard drive shown should be fine, providing you are using XP SP1 or SP2. Have not heard or read of any problems about Western Digital hard drives, beyond the usual failures, that all hard drives have.   I noticed that that the hard drive warranties are not published, as they are in the US

As you live in the UK, browse eBay for a tray, or you can buy a kit from here        http://www.issue-resolved.com/

So i buy that hard drive and the tray from http://www.issue-resolved.com, and that is all I needfor installation? If so, thanks Bev for all your help, can't wait to have a 300Gb hard drive. (May I ask , just in case , that does the bigger capacity hard drive have more failure rates?) Thanks again.

Just another thing, on this page http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_2400

It says there is a 160 GB hard drive limit,
Is that true?
Or is that limit gone after xp sp1 or 2?
cheers.

"Storage: Ultra ATA EIDE Hard drive up to 160 GB2 to meet your storage needs" That mean's the largest hard drive Dell sells with the D-2400 system, not the largest that can be installed.

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_2400

To use a larger than a 137GB hard drive, you will require XP SP1 or SP2.

You're welcome.
Regards to the larger hard drives having more failure rates, than smaller drives, that's a question, I don't have the answer to, I've been using 160GB Seagate hard drives for eleven months without a problem and Western Digital for three+ years again without a failure
As far as I'm concerned, there are only two types of hard drives. the drives that have failed and those that are waiting to failing. Hence the reason to keep your data backups current.

Do I need anything else for my installation? I do not have any extra connectors, etc.

If you buy the kit from  http://www.issue-resolved.com/  it will include the data cable and there should be a spare power connector for the second hard drive already inside the case.  Therefore you should be all set to go.

There are no instructions for installing a second EIDE hard drive in a D-2400, but as the D-4600 has the same case and chassis, you can use the same instructions for the physical installation.  Set the second hard drive's jumpers to "Cable Select" and connect it to the middle connecor on the cable

http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/parts.htm#1138667

After installation, check the setup, that the second drive is enabled [Auto] and In order for windows to recognize the
second hard drive, it must be patitioned and formatted.   These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard
drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate, but apply to all brands.

I read from else where that the storage capacity is dependent on the BIOS, is that true?

The system's BIOS can limit the size of the hard drive being installed, especially the older systems.

i don't see what reliability issues there are with Maxtor Hardrives. I have one in my Dell DImension 2400 that is exactly one year old at the end of November. Not an issue with it yet. It is so quiet. If it ever dies, i might buy another maxtor unless, i hear of a quieter hardrive or as equally quiet.
