Boot to safe mode, click Start, Click RUN, Type scanreg /restore, click OK, this should open the scanregistry restoration window.  Use teh up & down arrows to selet the date before you did this, press Enter. in about a minute, you'll hopefully get a notice that a restoire was successful, press enter & reboot.

I did that a hundred times already...no luck, but thanks anyway.  I am just about to use this computer as a boat anchor, and that's tragic since it holds so much information and knowledge, just like a senior citizen.  I do appreciate your reply, though.

Starmate5,
I am getting that same error message "Windows Protection Error. System Halted" and I wanted to know if you ever got a solution to fixing that error. Even when I Try to boot from safe mode. It still goes back to that blue screen. Any ideas or suggestions?

I hate to give you this information, but I ended up, after working via telephone for four days with Microsoft, getting a new computer  We reinstalled the OS, first over the existing one, and then did a total reinstallation, clearing the slate, so to speak.  No luck.  I even ended up buying a new hard drive and got into my computer and was able to back up some files, but it was loaded with problems.

My advice?  Buy a new computer now and save yourself.  It was a horrible experience.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  Good luck.  Hope you make out better than I did.
