Windows Update not working after installing DELL 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3.5" Hard Drive - Optiplex 755 sff - Vista

I cloned the original 80GB drive onto a compatible 1TB drive I bought from DELL. Everything seemed to be ok until I noticed that Windows Update wasn't working. "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I looked for drivers at both DELL and Intel and installed as recommended, but still no joy...Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Mimic01,

Did you try starting the Windows update service? Or did you at least check to see if it's started?

If you try starting it and it won't start, go to the Intel site and grab the most recent Intel RST.

Hi Osprey, thanks for the reply. Yes, the Windows Update service is started. I have the Intel Matrix Storage Manager installed. I am on Windows Vista 32. I tried to install RST but for some reason it wouldn't install?

Did you check Dell downloads for an update?

Yes, I did a system analysis and installed all recommended drivers. RST wasn't on the list.

It may be necessary to perform a clean installation of the operating system. Do you have your Vista disc?

I had a similar problem with my PC running Vista 32 bit with a 500GB system drive.  I tried cloning the six year old drive to a 2 TB drive.  The new drive would boot but Windows Update had the same error you reported.  I was able to clone to another old 500GB drive but not to any new drive.

I eventually found that I had to install the Microsoft hotfix for Windows Update and an Intel AHCI driver.

Search google for "Vista Hotfix for KB 2470478 won't install - error 0xc8000247".  There is a detailed explanation of the steps to fix this issue in a Microsoft answers forum.
