XPS T700r upgrade Hard Drive and BIOS Question

I have a Dimension XPS T700r. The BIOS version is A08. I've upgraded the memory to 768. It has a 27GB hard drive. Everything is working fine. What I want to do is add an additional hard drive (80GB Maxtor) as a storage drive. Do I need to upgrade my BIOS to version A11?

Also when I look at my BIOS configuration, the IDE Configuration shows:
IDE Controller BOTH
Primary IDE Master None
Primary IDE Slave None
Secondary IDE Master [_NEC DV-5800A-(SM)]
Secondary IDE Slave None

Shouldn't the current Primary IDE Master show the 27GB hard drive? (Since it's working, I don't want to mess with it.) When I add the new hard drive what do I need to do to the BIOS?

My documentation says the IDE drives should use the cable select jumper settings. I plan to set the new 80GB drive up on the second connector on the cable. Does this seem correct? Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

1. Based on this link http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?dn=1011995 , your 80GB HDD would theoretically work.

2. Concerning the jumper settings of your HDD, you could either choose cable select or slave but cable select would just work fine.

3. There's actually no need to update your BIOS since fixes created on newer BIOS versions are really not that significant and sometimes flashing the BIOS might just create a lot of problems for your system. As long as it works fine, there's no need to upgrade.

4. Once you installed the secondary HDD, the only thing you need to check in the BIOS is whether your HDD is detected or not.

5. I don't really get what you mean about "Shouldn't the current Primary IDE Master show the 27GB hard drive?". Is there anything wrong with it?

ischmidt,

I would install the drive first then if there is a problem that would indicate that the BIOS upgrade would be required for better operation then do it. This is a case of if it is not broken don't fix it.
