You need to install Vista on it.  Insert your Vista DVD, boot the system from it (F12 at powerup) and install.  Install the necessary drivers afterward.

The partition  you're asking about is not bootable.  Yes, you can make your own image - if you're not faint of heart technologically, you can use Image X.  If you want something easy to use, purchase a copy of Acronis True Image.

Have you considered reading the Acronis manual?

Also, the trial version will create a restore partition but without purchasing the program, you won't be able to do a restore if/when the need arises.

ok well i looked into the RECOVERY (D:) thing and found out that all its for is to restore hard drive to factory settings. well i dont reallly need that then. and making a bootable partition would take too much  space. so i did find out that i could use the recovery partitionto make a starup disk. well that is no longer on my old hard drive since i formatted it. so

1. is there a way to get recovery manager back so i can make a recoovery disk?

2. when i format a disk i get option of making a dos starup disk. is that what i want.

3. or should i contact dell and ask them if i can get a starup disk? i am no longer under warenty so i cant get them for free.

all i really want now is starup disk that way i have them if the vista disk does not do the job.

If you deleted the recovery partition on the old hard drive then no you cannot make recovery disks.

After you get Vista reinstalled you can use 3rd party software to make an image of your hard drive which will essentially be like Dell's but it will be your custom one.

The easiest to use is Acronis True Image.

Or buy the recovery set from Dell.
