can't open files on CD
I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with a CDR/W drive. It has problems opening files on some discs but not others. I get this error message: Cannot copy (or open) file: The system cannot read from the specified device. Sometimes I get this error message as soon as I access the CD drive: The disc in drive d has experienced an unrecoverable read error. This means that data that you previously put on the disc can no longer be correctly retrieved from the disc. it is advisable to move any critical data off the disc as soon as possible. Well, how am I supposed to move files off the disc if it won't read or copy? I read somewhere here about Direct CD's wizard using the Scandisk option, but when I double click on it to configure it, it only says it can be directly read or written.

Hi Cheryl,
May I ask a couple of questions?
What burning software are you using, what media type, CD-R / CD-RW, Packet writing or the mastering program, example Direct CD (Packet Writing) Roxio (Mastering)?
What is the name/model of the drive in question?
You can gather this information from Device Manager.
To access Device Manager, use any of the following methods:
• Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc.
• Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
• Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Once there, click the "+" next to DVD\CD-ROM drives, your name/model should be listed.
Best Regards!
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Hi Cheryl,
I still have some of the old Adaptec`s knowledge basic articles on the CD/RW site.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 30, article 3. Most of the links showing on the articles are long dead but the text of the article i have saved. See if anything there is relevant; unfortunately if these were created with a Packet writing program, the files may be un-salavgable; the pit-falls of this format.
Best Regards
