cannot burn CDs anymore
I have a dell inspiron desktop bought a little over a year ago. It is running VISTA. I cannot burn CDs anymore. Used to be working fine before. Following message appears: "error code 0x80070571", "invalid MS-DOS function"
I tried using different brands of CD ROMs and cleaned the drive, but problem persists.
Any help?
Many thanks

Hi Tigerjunior,
Are you using the built-in utility to burn discs? If so, have you tried the burning program provided by Dell, which is probably Roxio?

Thank you for your prompt response Osprey 4.
I have used Roxio several times. Also tried windows' burn function. On both cases I get the same error code. It was all OK until about two weeks ago.

Is that a blue screen error, or just an error code reported by the program?
EDIT: Sorry, one more question. Please provide the exact blank discs you are using, brand, speed and type (for example, Memorex, 16x, DVD+R). I need all the different media types that are producing this error.

I am not sure what is a "blue screen error". This error code message comes up as a small window in both cases (whether I use Roxio or just the Windows' burn utility)
I have tried SONY 700MB CD-RW and just R (4x-10x speed)
I have also tried moserbaer pro CD-R 52x speed
Both brands and types of CD-R and RWs worked perfectly fine before!
A friend of mine tells me that he fixed a similar problem by cleaning the registry, but I think that is scary!

Ok, let's try this Microsoft trick. Go to this page and look for the "Fix it" button. That's the fool-proof method that will not harm your registry. When you do this, there will be a report telling you if the problem was fixed.

Thank You Osprey4,
I went to Microsoft support page, tried FIX IT for my CD drive. It found a problem with it and fixed it. It was something like "corrupt storage" was fixed. But the problem still persists with ROXIO, whic must be a problem of that software. I can now right click in any window and "send' for example a picture or a file to my CD drive, and it burns nicely. I still cannot burn anything through Roxio. it still "encounters" a problem, and gives no deatils about that!

Ok, after doing the Microsoft fix, it may be necessary to reinstall Roxio.

Hi, I have purchased Dell Inspiron 15R last month.
I can only write moserbaer 52x 80min 700mb but not on moserbaer PRO 52x 80min 700mb.
I am getting an error message as format not supported. If I try to format the CD , it does not work. But the same Cd gets written on other laptop, so, I know that the Cd is ok.
Pl help

Hi Madhavipandit,
Moser Baer is not know for high quality media. Quite frankly, I would suggest using something else.
With regard to formatting, you should never need to format a CD using the built-in Windows disc burning utility.

I got this from MS.........
Windows Update error 80070571
Applies to Windows 7
If you receive Windows Update error 80070571 while installing updates, it's usually because the update content isn't valid and could be corrupted. This most likely is the result of a disk error. To resolve the problem, follow the steps below, and then try to check for Windows updates again.
To check for disk errors
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
Open Computer by clicking the Start button
, and then clicking Computer.
Right-click the hard disk that Windows is installed on (usually drive C), and then click Properties. The drive that Windows is installed on displays the Windows icon.
Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Select both the Automatically fix file system errors check box and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Depending on the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. If you're prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer, close all programs and restart your computer before proceeding to the next steps.
Note
For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.
If you continue to see this error, see this automatic troubleshooter on the Microsoft Support website, or go to the Microsoft Answers website for more assistance.
