Hi Reluctant,

I had researched this same issue with another Member recently. They I believe finally replaced the drive, figured they wasted more time than the $35 a new DVD+/-RW cost. I found some of the same information, other said to try a firmware update as well.
I have the article on the Upper & Lower Filters in Section 100, article 31 of the CD/RW link in my post. The steps are fairly easy to follow, and has been used here I dare say 1000+ times or more.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Flashed my Samsung drive with Dell's newest update. Killed the drive entirely. If that's what you did, this is the problem. Dell sent me a new NEC drive, that while loud, is problem free.

Right after I did this, I noticed that the driver info did not match my drive. I have Emailed Dell to fix this driver update, but do not know if they have done so yet.

Note: Have a second optical Samsung drive with Lightscribe that I have had absolutely no problems with. (Actually, the OEM Nero software that came with it required me to replaced the wnaspi32.dll from the Nero website with a "fixed" '.dll). But this is a software problem, not hardware.

' like my second optical drive (SH-S183) so much, that I have bought another one for my sister as a gift.
