computer recognizes cd/rw as cd/rom and software won't work

Dell tech support sent tech with new CD/RW drive after lightening strike, when he installed, he put a CD in and it read it, so he said I was working. After he left, I realized none of the recording software was recognizing the drive so I went in to the device manager and it says the device is a CD-ROM. Also says it is a CD-OM in the BIOS. Tech support says it is a software issue but software support couldn't fix it either. Now they are sending another part but is it the software. I was told I would have to reinstall Windows XP but I don't really want to do that cause I will lose all my files. Help!!!

Four questions:

  1. What system do you have?
  2. What drive did the tech install and is it the same model as the one replaced?
  3. What burning software are you using?
  4. Did you uninstall, then reinstall and patch the burning software after the drive was installed?

You should not need to reinstall Windows.

Sorry for the cut/stepover John, darn phone rang, should have refreshed first, my bad....

Hi nuttbush,

The software may be your burning software, consider uninstalling / reinstalling it.
If this does not help, then some standard steps; Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, artile 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2.
Then Section 12, article 2; Section 100, articles, 67, 97
Best Regards

Thanks, guys! Some of your suggestions I had already tried. And I did refuse to reinstall the Windows when tech support said to do it. If the BIOS was recognizing it as a CD_ROM and not a CD-RW, I did not think it was a software problem. Guess what, the sent another technician out today with another CD drive and it works right and the computer recognizes it as a CD-RW drive. The tech said the one they had installed must have been bad!!! So problem solved, just wish tech support would have listened to me in the first place and replaced it again before I spent 7 hours on the phone with one person after another. It does pay to stick to your guns even if it takes a while to get your message across.
