dual layer dvd problems
Has anyone had any experience with dual layer dvds? I've been using Sony Movie Studio/Platinum to burn standard R+4.7GB dvds on my XPS/Gen 3 and can vplay them fine in my dvd players with no problems. But, when I've burned R+8.5GB dual layer dvds, although I can burn them OK nad play them in the Phillips 8710 burner in my XPS, none are being recognized in any of my dvd players.
Any suggestions?

The software I'm using is the new Sony Movie Studio Platinum, which has their DVD Architect software included (the DVD Architect actually burns the DVD disc). Anyway, I can't figure out why regular 4.7GB R+DVD discs I've burned with theis software plays on my DVD-Rom drive (as well as my DVD players in my home), but the dual-layer 8.5GB R+DVD discs burned with the same software will not.
I wonder if I changed brands of DVD blank discs would help any? The dual-layer discs I burned were Verbatim..., perhaps another brand like Memorex would change things?? Or perhaps I need a better brand of a dual-layer burner?
I've called Dell XPS tech help, as well as Sony tech help, but none of them had any answers.

Memorex would be a dive downhill!
I think all you are seeing is the 'normal' variation in compatibility of players.
My Sony Player/Recorder will not play a burned DL under any circumstances! Yet the Sony Player in another room will play them without any fuss…
Take your DL disc to an electronics store and tell them you are in the market for a player that will play this disc. It is a cheap test but assuming some will play it, the purchase would be your decision.
