external hard drive for inspiron 8600

I have recently purchased a 120GB internal hard drive for my inspiron 8600.  I am in search of ways to extract my entire 40GB hard drive to my new one.  Any solutions?  I am looking into getting an external hard drive, but I am not sure if that will work.  Please, help.
