hard drive crash--how to replace Windows 98?

Hard Drive Crash!!! I didn't realize that hard drives can totally crash after four years (planned obsolescence?)and data can be irrecoverable, as it was in my case. Life goes on? Wrong!! Anyhow, a friend installed a new hard drive, but I am unable to reinstall Windows 98 from the disks I have. One of the problems is that we have so many dell computers and all the stuff has gotten intermixed, so it is hard to tell which goes with my computer in terms of the license numbers that you have to enter. But even after I think I got that far, there are things missing apparently, and it just goes around in circles. I am desperate! Whast else do I need besides the Windows 98 cd in order to put windows on my new hard drive?

If you can boot the machine and use the cdrom then you shouldn't need anything else other than the license # to install a stand-alone version of win98.  Make sure that you enter the license # exactly (case matters) and don't confuse O's and 0's.  If however, you are using a win98Upgrade version of win98, then you also need a copy of a previously owned operating system such as a stand-alone version of win95 or win3.1.  If you happen to use win3.1 as your upgrade proof, make sure you have all the floppys.  Sometimes win98 will ask for just one, and sometimes it will ask for all of them.

Please post back with your model, then someone can point you to the Reinstall guide for that model. Or, just got to the Support home page and enter the service tag number, then go to the Solutions tab, and you'll find the Reinstall guide.

If you need help partitioning and formatting the hard drive, post back.
