how to enable Intel Rapid Start Technology?

Hello expert,

I've just received my Dell Inspiron 14z laptop.  It came pre-loaded with windows 8.  I was having a hard time using windows 8, so, I wiped and reinstalled a clean Windows 7 Pro.  However, everytime I start up my laptop, I received this message said, "Your system does not appear to have Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled".

I checked the BIOS and it is enabled.  I have the most updated BIOS.

Hi sagiw,

Please check if the system is configured with mSATA drive in the BIOS screen. To go to BIOS screen tap F2 at startup. In the BIOS screen check what is listed for Fixed HDD and mSATA device. Next navigate to ‘Advanced’ tab and check what mode the SATA Operation is.

Awaiting your response.

Hi Sagiw,

I am sorry for the inconvenience. Since you made both HDD and mSATA drive  offline, everything on the HDD is erased. That is the reason you are getting the error message HDD not detected. Please got to BIOS and change the SATA operation to IRST and then install the Operating system on the regular HDD and not on mSATA drive.

Hi sagiw,

I apologize for the inconvenience. I will be unable to contact you by phone or chat but will provide Web content support.

Please go to BIOS and change the SATA Operating to AHCI and follow the steps given below:

  1. Insert the Operating system disc into the disc drive and restart the system and tap F12 at startup to boot from OS disc. Select language and input method.
  2. Instead of selecting ‘Install Now’ Select ‘Repair your computer’.
  3. Once Repair your computer is clicked, choose option that reads ‘Use Recovery Tool……..’ as shown in the picture below:

4. Next select command prompt. Once command prompt screen appears:

  • Type DISKPART  and hit enter
  • Type LIST DISK and hit enter. It will show HDD and mSata as well.
  • Type SELECT DISK 0 and hit enter.
  • Type CLEAN and hit enter
  • Type LIST DISK and hit enter
  • Type SELECT DISK 1 and hit enter.
  • Type CLEAN and hit enter
  • Type EXIT and hit enter. (to exit from diskpart)
  • Type EXIT and hit enter. (to exit from cmd)

5. Click on shutdown now. Restart the system and go to BIOS and change the SATA operation to “Intel Rapid Storage Technology” from AHCI. Save the setting and restart the system and tap F12 at startup now. Again boot from OS disc and select language and input method.
6. Click on ‘Install Now’. You will get HDD listed there. Please install the Operating system on the HDD and not on mSATA.
7.After Operating system installation, install all the drivers.
8. Next install the “Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) raid driver from the link given below:
http://dell.to/1dGgvXQ (Install the latest version).
9. Next enable Acceleration.

If I make all the mSata a hibernate partition with id 84 I can run the rapid start but not the rapid storage.

if I want to make the mSata 10GB hibernate partition I can't install any one of them.

Hi sagiw,

Please perform the steps given below to create hibernate partition:

Open IRST application and click on Performance tab.

In enable Acceleration window, select custom and enter 22GB (do not select 18.6GB for full disk) as shown in the picture below:

Now the Acceleation is enabled.

You may have to reboot the system couple of times to see the acceleration boot time.
Note: Wait for 5 minutes before each reboot.

Next Click on start and in the search box type Diskpart to open it as administrator. The Diskpart.exe command utility should appear.

Steps to create Hiberantion partition:

•             At the DISKPART> prompt, type list disk and press Enter.
•             In the list of disks, locate the mSATA SSD. It will be 8 GB since we have used 22 GB for caching.
•             Type select disk #, where # is the number listed by the mSATA SSD, and press Enter.
•             Type list disk and press Enter.
•             An asterisk (*) should now appear next to the mSATA Disk
•             Type create partition primary and press Enter.

In the Disk Management window, the mSATA Disk will not show the status as Healthy instead of Unallocated.

•             Type set id=84 override and press Enter.
•             The command window should now state DiskPart successfully set the partition ID.

In the Disk Management window, the mSATA SSD will show Healthy (Hibernation Partition).
•             Close the command window and the Disk Management window and reboot the system.

Revert for further queries.
