how to restore using the ghost image from restore partition

hi, i decided it was time to delete the restore partition of my new i6400 and save some space, by putting the image file onto a dvd for backup instead. so i found the ghost image file by making the partition visible and i copied the files (3 of them) onto my usb hard drive for the time being. i then wiped my computer and made sure the hard drive was in one partition. i then installed xp home using my bros desktop cd, and it was fine. i then installed norton ghost and tried to restore my laptop to the dell restore state using the file, but it will not allow me to use the image file to restore my laptop. so now i have the dell ghost image from the restore partition, which norton ghost 10.0 can not use!!!

is there any way for me to use norton ghost 10.0 and the image file to restore my laptop?? or could i use these things to make a boot dvd?? any help would be greatly appreciated, as i am currently running with no video or sound drivers!!

thanks

One reason it cannot work is that Ghost 9 and later versions are based on Drive Image, purchased by Symantec a few years ago, whose operation is fundamentally different than earlier versions of Ghost, to accomplish the same objective. Some other versions of Ghost may be compatible with the image. The retail versions of Ghost 9 & !0 included an earlier version, presumably because of the compatibility issue.

Dell used an earlier version of Ghost which was stripped down for limited use in the Dell PC Restore feature, and the restore utility was stored in the partition with the factory image. If you saved the recovery utility file, you might be able to run it from DOS and restore the factory image.

Dan Goodell provides instruction for saving the PC Restore image onto a DVD and how it might be restored from there.

Since you have imaging software, you can create a compatible image of the C: system configuration after restoring the factory image.
