Sounds like you ignored the early warning signs. Reseat the drive; if it's still not found, it's history - replace it.

I wanted to replace it the first time I talked with support, but they convinced me it would work.  Now if I can get them on the phone instead of hold, maybe I can get a new hd on the way.  Thanks for your reply.

Run the Dell diagnostics if possible, and email them your service tag and the error. They will arrange to have a replacement drive sent.

Actually, after spending 90 min. online with tech support, they decided it was prob. the motherboard (seems this model has had many problems with that mother board) and a tech person to replace it this week.  Hopefully they will fix the problem.
 
The diagnostic would not run....
