problem burning to dvd-r

Dimension 8400. Using philips DVD + RW 8601 drive/Sonic Record Now 7.10. When trying to make 'exact copy', the source dvd is read ok. Sonic asks for blank or rewritable dvd. Tried several brand new TDK 1-4x DVD-R, but the drive just ejects them and Sonic asks for blank or RW again. Tried a TDK 1-4x RW and it burned ok - good! - but I do want to burn to DVD-Rs as well. Downloaded latest patch from Sonic, but no difference.

On reading other posts, thought it may be an issue of needing to use higher than 4x, but the RW that burned ok rates the same (1-4x) as the Rs that won't, so I'm a bit confused. Are Rs and RWs likely to get a different response from the drive re the rating?

Any help/advice much appreciated.

To expand upon jguarnieri's suggestion, the Philips DVD8601 is a DVD+
burner and can not burn DVD- media.  Obtain some DVD+R media and you
will on your way.

For reference ..............

In the beginning, buy in a small quanity and buy a good known brand
of media.  Not all DVD media is the same in compatibility and quality.

Wolfie, P.P.S.,

I feel stupider than anyone on this board, but to me, all the disks seem alike. I'll go out tomorrow and buy some disks. Can you please tell me what exact brand and specs to buy? Now, my dual layer DVD's would not work with the DVD plus R Double Layer disks that I bought, and they weren't cheap.

I have your same exact problem, I'm hoping you can help me. I've been trying to burn DVDs and Cds all night and I've tried 4 different DVD CD rom RW disks and they too were all rejected. They were read ok, but when it came to burn them, the computer spit them out. I've tried everything. Disabling my Norton AV, Pop ups, you name it. Nothing works. Needless to say I am totally aggravated and frustrated. Can you please help me? I was told to check this and that, nothing helped. My machine is new, it's an 8400. I really owe you one if you can help me get this up and running. One of the main reasons I bought a computer was to copy cds. I have Dual drives, do you? I've used CD-RW disks, Imation RW disks, Verbatim Dual Layer disks, you name it. Nothing works. I also have Sonic 7.1. I thought the upgrade to .2 was free, but it's nearly $50. I don't need the Deluxe version, I just need this version to work. My old Gateway computer would copy any kind of CD/DVD disk. Didn't realize these Dell computers were so darn fussy. My email address is rplante1@maine.rr.com if you prefer to email me. Either way, I'd be grateful for your help. It was the same exact thing, when I tried to burn "exact copies."
