"Please insert the correct CD-ROM...

...select OK and restart application."
This is the warning I'm getting, with the correct CD inserted in the drive!

Running WindowsXP Home Edition.

I've followed the advice in Microsoft KB article 228985 (worth looking at if you're suffering from the same bug!), and installed the patches recommended, but to no avail. The games in question appear to install OK, and I suspect the problem is to do with their copyright protection. The titles are Thief2 and Myst 3 - Exile.
they run OK on my son's Millennium system, and this may be a problem limited to XP!

Very frustrating, and I'd be grateful for any ideas!

I'm having exactly the same thing with windows xp - on LInks 2001, NFS IV, and MS FS 2000.  I've also checked the article and no luck...  Dell support was completely clueless, and I agree that it's probably the "safedisk" encription technology.

ME TOO!

Same story.  Same error.  Same suspicion of copyright protection.

This with a brand new Dell Inspiron 6000

  • dedicated graphics memory
  • 1.6 Ghtz Pentium M
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 128 MB Graphics
  • Windows XP Professional
  • CD-RW / DVD drive

The games not working for me are SimCity 4, and Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2.

Here's what I do know:  SafeDisc uses "read errors" to validate the CD upon game startup.  It seems possible to me that these or other subtle security features could be getting skipped or misread by whatever low-end CD drive dell ships with their notebooks, or it could be XP.  (These games also work fine on my other computer: Compaq-Win 98)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

My first suggestion would be to see if you have Sonic DLA installed. This is known to cause problems like this. You're best off uninstalling the program completely.

Beerman, since you have an Inspiron, you may want to try the Inspiron forum if my suggestion does not help.

Many thanks, Osprey, for your suggestion, but no Sonic DLA on my system, either now or in the past.

I'm afraid I'm putting reponsibility for this not entirely unusual problem (as evidenced by the several other correspondents who have tracked down this now rather dated thread) to Dell computers, and the cheapo hardware/firmware they have used.  There is no other explanation forthcoming from Dell support.

The lesson is clear, I'm afraid, and we won't be replacing our Dell systems with the same make.

Problem Solved (for me anyway):  Though several reboots of my system on the date the problem first occurred (the first day I got it) yielded no results, a reboot the day after made the problem vanish.  Since then, I've seen no trace of the problem.  I don't think I did anything special, though I was messing with basic settings and functions a lot.  But more likely I think (on my system at least) it was a 24 hour bug that had some conflict with initialization of windows.  Maybe something else.  All I know is, I'm cured.  Good luck to the rest of ya.
