"operating system not found"

Dell Dimension XPS T550

First intermitent now ongoing error message on boot up "operating system not found"  I'm not sure where to start. After about 30 tries the system will boot and operate normally.  Hard drive makes no unusal noise when operating.  System is 4+ years old.  Bad hard drive?  Bad BIOS?  Dying battery?  I'm clueless.

lkrohn,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

From what you are describing, it sounds like the drive or data cable are at fault.  Start by reseating the cables and we'll go from there.

Also, make sure you're backups are update.

Thanks for the response.  I have done that once with no apparent results.  I am not now at the location where the Dimension XPS is.  Would it be wothwhile to change out the battery?

lkrohn,

I don't think it's the battery but you can try.  Is the system under warranty?

lkrohn,

If you've checked the cables, I really thinks it's the drive itself.  It's not easy to say since you mention that once it boots it's fine.  If you have an unused power connector in the system, try using that and see what happens.

I would like to mention that you really do need to make sure your backups are current.

No, it is no longer under warranty.
