raid 0 in xps
howdy, i am looking for some basic information on what exactly i need to set up a raid 0 with two WD 36 GB SATA raptor drives on my xps system. i've never done it before and i was just wondering if there was a raid controller built in to the mobo or if i would need to buy one. i know you can set up a raid in windows, but my intention was to setup a raid 0 using two identical drives(listed above) then do a fresh install of xp pro on them(basically for performance purposes) and use my other 80GB drive for important data/backup purposes. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Im not familiar with your PC or motherboard and chipset, but I recently put RAID 0 with two SATA drives in my PC, my motherboard details state that it supports both SATA RAID and IDE RAID, for SATA it has a built in hardware controller called ICH5R. I also had to set up SATA and RAID in the BIOS controls.
My motherboard details clearly state this capability, does your documentation or any you can find online mention this at all ? I suspect if not, then you won't have this capability built in.

Hi,
In my device manager, under the SCSI and RAID controllers, mine shows as Intel 82801ER SATA RAID controller, this is because my motherboard chipset is by Intel and I have RAID installed. I think you need to go into your BIOS first and check to see if you have the RAID option, alternatively check any documentation you have on the PC to see if you have RAID capability built into your motherboard. If you do not have RAID built in then you are likely to need to buy a controller card. I'm happy to explain how to install RAID and WinXP, but with my system it was a case of enabling RAID in the BIOS, and enabling Serial ATA in the BIOS prior to installing the 2 Serial ATA drives and then loading Windows XP ( this is slightly different too, as you often need to pass a RAID/SCSI driver to windows whilst it installs, which you don't do on non-RAID configuration. So can you have a look to see if your system will support RAID without having to buy a controller card ?

Assuming you have a XPS Gen 2 your mother board supports it. I setup my XPS purchased Mid Dec 2003, with RAID 1 by adding another SATA drive to match the orginal one installed by DELL. The XPS mother board uses the Intel 1CH5R chip set for this function.
The following Intel link should give you information on installing and configuring:
http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa_raid/sb/CS-009333.htm
Make sure you enable RAID before starting the install of the OS. There is a option in setup called SATA RAID that you need to set to ON. After booting from the CD ROM press F6 to install the RAID Pre-install drvier from a diskette that you have to prepare ahead of time. The drivers should of been sent with your system. You could download them also from Intel. After installing the OS you have to install the Application Accelerator.
Here are the links to the Intel drivers:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=961
I was able to migrate to RAID 1 because DELL had already configured the system to be RAID ready by installing the Driver and Application Accelerator and having the SATA RAID option to ON.
Good luck.
