recover data unmountable boot error

I have an old dimension 2200 desktop computer with an unmountable boot error.  I ran the IDE  diagnostic and got a code retung 4.  Not sure that that means but I assume the hard drive is toast or close to it.  If I remove the hard drive, is there a way for me to recover the data files on another computer?

You could try installing the failed hard drive in a working desktop as the secondary drive and see if you can transfer the files, or install the failed HD in a USB powered IDE enclosure, similar to this, then attach it to working system and see if the files can be transfered to the C:/ hard drive.

Unmountable boot volume usually means a damaged file system, or a bad hard drive (damaged sectors), I would connect it to another PC as a secondary drive, boot the system, if the file system is corrupt, a checkdisk should trigger before windows loads, let it run, it may repair the damaged file system so you can copy your data off. After you get your data backed up, put it back in the original system and see if it will boot now.

Good luck.
