startup problems

Question

Hi I have a dell dimension 5000 i have recently had problems with booting up sometimes when i turn it on it loads to the windows screen then freezes., or it reboots then freezes. If i then try to restart it after a few minutes it does not do anything just makes a noise.  if it does load sometimes after a few minute it just closes down unexpectedley then we have to start again i leave it for about an hour ican try again & just like now it has booted ok. but i receive the message. booting system failed at chechpoint (Ithr) running xp sp2   any ideas please

A full reinstall of Operating system may fix the problem. There is a big downside to that you will lose any data you have saved on hard drive. Or if you remember when the problem began you can try a rollback before the problem started.

many thanks for your reply i forgot to mention that i restored the computer to factory settings some two weeks ago & had a couple of workable days on the machine.

What type of noise does it make? Where in the system does it seem to come from?

Try resetting the NVRAM on the system. To find out how, go to the BIOS board and check in the FAQ for the link on how to reset NVRAM on Dimension systems.

Also, just to make sure, you may want to run the Hard drive quick test on the system. Refer to the FAQ above on how to run the 90/90 diags.

Hi many thanks for your suggestions i have followed the instructions & at the moment it is booting OK but the test will come when it has been turned off overnight (lets hope for the best).To answer your query about the sound it makes it is a constant buzzing & the system fan revs up. When i have tried in the past to bootup i eventually get the screen that tells me to contact dell, after a few seconds this screen starts filling with random letters & numbers (weird)

You may at this point, want to run a full diagnostic on the system. At startup, hit F12, choose boot to the utility partition, and follow the prompts to run the full diagnostics.

Note any errors and report them back here. Make sure you have a data CD in your drive(s) to avoid getting a false read error there.

At this point it is hard to say what the problem might be.

Many thanks for recent reply. it has been awhile & quite alot has happened I ran the dionostics you suggested all was fine apart from the following.intel ch6 all the following failed ib22-061b enable playback,of1bsurround sound,ib22-101b control playback, ib22-071b record & playback. I am not sure whot these do as i have speakers connected & have no trouble recording or listening to music. With regard to the continuing problem i became so frustrated with the problem that i called in an engineer who took the machine over the weekend he had  NO problems despite running the system over a long period. However when he returned it to me it happened again this time he could see the problem & claims it is a faulty memory module he removed one of the 512mb cards & the system started to run fine. this is now day two & the system has not yet misbehaved the computer is only 2 years old & i am supprised that this should fail, but at the moment he appears to be correct. if the system fails again i will let you know but if you have any further suggestions please let me know.

im also havin the problem with the noisy fan and no screen, just get a yellow light when i turn the computer on. any 1 got any ideas how to fix it
