stop error 0x51cant reboot

Hi all this is my first post. Ive browsed the forums but havent found a discussion on my particular problem.

I have a dell dimension 4600 running windows xp. I recently got a popup warning from my norton antivirus saying something to the effect that my computer ws being scripted and norton recomended I click an option to stop the script. I did and my pc froze so I turned it off. Now when I try to reboot I get a bluescreen error "stop error 0x51. registry error. Im too lazy to type the whole messsage. But now I cant get past the bluescreen everything I try just ends up with the blue screen error. I put the windows xp cd in and tried to use the repair console by pressing "r" and It asks me which system I want to log onto 1:c:windows.

(press enter to cancel)?a:_

I enter 1 and get the dreaded blue screen again. I get the bluscreen error when I tell it to load windows xp as well. I have been dealing with this for a few days and googled the heck out of this stop error message but microsofts info hasnt helped. I cant go into safe mode either. at this point I'm ready to just reformat. Is there a way to wipe the hard drive with out using the win xp cd?. I even download a 5 floppy boot set of winxp and tried to boot from the floppy drive with no luck. You guys are my last resort. My next option is a 12 pack of beer and a sledge hammer. Any input would be sooo greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Brian H

Thank you for your reply osprey. Ok here goes;

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

 If this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

check to make sure any new hardware or software is installed correctly.

If problems continue disable or remove any new hardware or software.

Disable Bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to disable components, press f8 to select advanced options and select safe mode.

Technical information: ***STOP: 0x00000051 (0x00000003, 0x00000003, 0x00000000, 0xE1548000)

Well thanks for nothing. I took matters into my own hands. Here is my revolutionary solution. Pay attention, this may be hard for point and click geeks to comprehend. I opened up the case and removed the hard drive leaving the connections in place. I then placed a small but POWERFULL rare earth magnet on the hard drive case, took a deep breath and fired it up. What ever malicious code ( probably written by a 15 year old punk) that was on the hdd didnt stand a chance spinning at 7200 rpm under my magnet.

No more blue screen. I am reformatting as I type this. I will call this techniqe the Holmes hard drive rehabilitation. HHDR.

Later snobs
