system wont boot, missing winsrv OUCH
chk disk was running continuously in 3 step mode. I could stop it in first 10 seconds and could log on. then I tried to chk for errors on c drive and got an error message, so i cancelled that and tried a defrag and it said a chkdisk was scheduled and wouldnt let me do it so i restrted to do a chk disk and this time it did a 5 step chk disk and found some bad files for first time and some orphan files but kept trying to run continuously so i stopped it in the first 10 seconds and now it says it cant start, c0000135 there is not winsrv. I cant start from safe mode to do sys recovery i just cant start. i have a 4500 with xp home. there doesnt seem to be a recovery disk, just the xp disk, should i start with the xp disk in the cd? there were other messages about missing dll's on an earlier start up but i could start without them. I dont know how this happend but i was movint a folder of pics to a backup drive in the background while Picassa was indexing and got a messge that 2 of the pics were corrupted, which they were not before that, and that is when my troubles started. I'd like to restore to a few days ago but i cant get signed on to do it. Even trying using safe mode i get the winsrv is mssing.....can i replace winsrv from the cd? thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Andy:
It sounds to me that your drive is headed south. I suggest you run the Dell 90-90 diagnostics before trying to install XP. Reboot your computer. At the Dell blue logo screen, press the Ctrl + Alt + D keys at the same time. The computer beeps once to acknowledge that the hard drive diagnostics have been initiated and the following message appears:
IDE Diagnostics running, please wait
Primary
Drive 0: (Drive Model) -
The test may take up to three minutes to run the diagnostics (the time is dependent upon size and speed of drive). When the diagnostics are complete, one of the following messages appears:
IDE Diagnostics running, please wait
Primary
Drive 0: (Drive Model) - Pass
Drive 1: No IDE Device
-OR-
Secondary
Drive 0: (CD-ROM Model) - Diagnostics not supported
Drive 1: No IDE Device
Test complete, Press to reboot
Press the key and restart the computer. Please post back and let me know what you get.

hi,
I believe you have tried to install windows XP service pack 2....You wll have to uninstall service pack2 and that would take care of it. Follow this document
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350
since your system is not booting even in safe mode, you will have to follow the steps mentioned under the section "Use Recovery console"
You have to use the same XP reinstallation CD to enter recover console.
If you were not able to uninstall SP2 from recovery console, go fo an XP repair.

Osprey, I will try that tonight. I also am thinking maybe I could copy the winsvr dsl file from another computer to mine. at least them maybe i could get up and try a system restore? I am concerned about the hard drive.
On the other hand, I didnt do the Pack 2 upgrade. I did some research and saw that people who had done it had gotten this message but that didnt apply to me .
First I will try your idea, then I will try to replace the dll file, then,,,,,,i hang myself:smileyhappy:
