urgent help needed : 0x000007B and error code 7...

Hello, another problem with my Dell Dimension 9200 :( im not happy.

Firstly and mroe importantly, i am a musician, and I CANNOT afford to lose the data on this hard drive, over 200 self written recorded and produced songs :(
anyways on with the show
my hard drive is a 500gb, and is partitioned into C: D: and E:
C: and D: are 50gb each and E: is my data partition which takes up the remaining space.

Now when i start windows i get error code 0x0000007B - after researching, this is a hard drive error that can be fixed using chkdsk /f.
great, but how do i get to chkdsk??
tried using windows bootable CD and recovery console, cant get that far, when the option is supposed to come up and say "Welcome to windows" the same error comes up. tried using another boot CD ith chkdsk on it, but chkdsk acts like the only drive it can see is the floppy drive its running from.

I then booted into partitionmagic on the same boot CD, hoping that formatting C: would stop the boot errors. On restart i get the expected NTLDR is missing, so then i try to reinstall windows again, slight smile knowing that it should work, and BOOM the same error.

the only other thing i can think of is buying anothe SATA drive, plugging it in as primary, and running chkdsk from that, from a fresh windows installation,. however, im a student and very skint and no one else in this flat has SATA, or id put my drive in thier computer.

I ran hard drive diagnostics, and i got errror code 7, which aparently is a hard drive failiure? or hard drive failiure imminent? Im really hoping i wont lose my 400gb partition, it contains my life.

Finally, if chkdsk /f dosent work, im still under warranty, will i get it replaced? And will they copy my very precious data across too? i mean i could do it myself if they just deliverd the new drive :(

any slight amount of help graciously needed

sorry for the lack of organization but im really annoyed and scared for my precious music.

thanks :)

thanks for the help :)
ive got no where to store this data tho, no one in my flath as that sort of space and i cant afford another hard drive of this capacity. Surely formatting the dodgy partition should have solved the boot problem :( im scared to just buy a small one and run chkdsk /r incase i do lose the data heh!

by ringing dell, will i get a new drive shipped out do you know? still in my one year warranty, only got the thing late november ffs!! :(
thanks for all youre help

"by ringing dell, will i get a new drive shipped out do you know?"

"I ran hard drive diagnostics, and i got error code 7, which aparently is a hard drive failiure? "

Yes Dell will warranty the drive, just tell them about the error code, and ask them if you could keep the old drive to try and get your data, most times they will not charge you to do this, never hurts to ask.

If my living was Dependant on these files, I would find a way to afford an external USB hard drive. They go on sale all the time.

P.S.  Tell Dell you do Not want a Maxtor brand drive as a replacement.

"Firstly and mroe importantly, i am a musician, and I CANNOT afford to lose the data on this hard drive"

Back up, Back up, Back up, every day.

"error code 0x0000007B"

Go here, about half way down the page
http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php  it is a partition problem not a file system problem. chkdsk will not help and may cause further corruption of data.

"0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

"Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus."

Remove that hard drive now and use a USB to hard drive adapter, plug it into another machine and get your data off of the E partition. Hope the drive has not died on you.

Post back.

Usually within 3-7 days, tell them you make a living on your New Dell and would appreciate 2nd day shipping, be very polite and you will get what you need from Dell.

I am curious to know if you had gone into the computer Setup (F2) and possibly made any changes under the Drive section. If it was set to Raid On and you changed it to Auto/ATA or visa versa that would cause the problems with the BSoD code, but the other error code 7 is definitely a failed or failing drive.
I agree that you need to have a second drive in or attached to your computer to backup your data. You should also look at getting some form of software to automate thes backups for you like Ghost or Acronis True Image(my preferance is Ghost).

hey, nope all my bios settings were still on default, apart from waking the computer up at 7am every day, i even restored all defaults, to no avail. :(

news update:
rang dell this morning, and talked to a "tech". he made me run diagnostics, and the utility partition, got error 7 again and read fails. he said fine we will post hard drive, i said could i have a SATA calbe *checks* yes :), i said can it not be a maxtor, i think he kinda said "i will have to check " but it never got mentioned again. lucky for me i got it posted next day, so its coming tomorrow :D that i am happy for, the level of support was good, even tho the tech guy diddnt know any more than me, he just needed confirmation of the error. at one point he had me running the read test, and it was only at 10% after 40 minutes so i talked him round convinced him i knew the drive was failing.

he says i can keep the old drive, for a week, then a courier will come to collect it! i thort i would have to post it away. so im gonna plug the drive in as a slave and hopefuly  copy my stuff over.

but yeah the support i got was good, after the suggestions you gave :) thanks they really worked "yeah im a uni student, and my main income is from the computer ;)" im almost certain that got me the fast dispatch, and a lot of "thanks a lot" and "brilliant"

so yeah, a success story in the end, if you forget that the hard drive failed in the first place, and there is still a slight posibility i wont get my data :P
