Dell Support Assist Fails to install

Hi there

In April I had a few issues with Dell Support Assist
It wouldn't open or did but said it failed to load after trying to display the dashboard after several minutes.

So I'd usually uninstall it and reinstall it.

Thought lately it did that again but uninstalling it and reinstalling it didn't work.

So I went into the files and deleted some of the folders.

The folders were of the type :
C:\Program Files\Dell\SupportAssist (Update)
*******\AppData\Local\Dell\
One of them was called Vault

Bad idea ofc because it wasn't a usual uninstall.

I tried cleaning the register but to no use.
They were in local Machine SOFTWARE DellSupportAssist (of the sort)
Those actually deleted the existing services in the Task Manager that were left.
I don't see them anymore

I've tried following some of the help on this community, but I still can't reinstall it.

I'm at a loss of options so any help is welcomed

While installing open even viewer > windows logs > Application

Let the installation fail and you will have exact reason in error logs for installation failure.

Meanwhile you can also try  this guide I have posted on this forum several times.

Follow this Guide from start to end do not miss any steps

You may find that a few thing I am recommending to delete are already deleted from your computer so skip those steps.

1 Use Microsoft's Installer :

This step is crucial as Microsoft's uninstaller disables the services as well. Choose SupportAssist and uninstall, Uninstall Dell updates by running the the uninstaller again. If Support Assist doesn't show in List ignore this step.

Reboot (important)

  1. Delete following folders and ignore the once which are already deleted.

C:/ Program Data/ PCDR

C:/ Program Data/Supportassist

C:/ Program Data/Dell/Dell data volt

C:/ Program Files/ Dell/Supportassist

C:/ Program Files/ Dell/ Dell data Volt

C:/ windows/Temp (everything inside the folder

Remove these Registries

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services key.

Delete Dell hardware service, Delete Dell client management service, Delete Dell updates.

Open device manager > system devices : If you see 2 Dell dala volt devices, please uninstall the second one.

Reboot

install SupportAssist

Thanks for the tip about the event logs

It seems that Dell needs to update their modules because Microsoft.NETCore.App 5.0.0 x64 is not installed.

Thus why the errors.

DavG94_0-1653750096706.png

But Dell is out of date because THAT specific version is out of date !

Hopefully Dell will take that into account soon...

Until then I'll have to wait because I'm not planning on installing a no longer supported element.

look in the journal of events on our pc
Check in

  • Windows llogs/journals
    • Application

If you have this type of error, then don't look any further, you have the same problem as me.

They are using a no longer supported version of the NETRuntime component and DELL needs to update it asap, because it ain't good to have a software using depreciated components, but who knows when they will

Actually, I followed your steps and I think deleting temp and data vault did the trick, after almost half year of trying I could finally install SA! Thank you so much!

Same problem here on both my systems. The installation starts but comes up with the error that the installation was unable to complete the installation. Restart the PC dosent help. So the update is failing. I guess that we have to wait for Dell to send out a automatic fix so the installation will complete successful? Seen several post on the same problem today. Will not force install a outdated NET 5.0 and possibly be causing other bigger problems. Luckily SA still works after failed attempt (need to restart the pc first before launching SA again).

Strange, I have .Net 5.0 installed on two of my machines and only one fails to update SA. The other one  updated successfully.

Hi XPS_Man:

The Dell Tech Support video at Dell SupportAssist Not Installing was recently updated on 17-Jun-2022 and includes some additional folders, registry entries and Windows services that are not listed in your clean reinstall instructions <above> (e.g., C:\Program Files\Dell\SupportAssistAgent, etc.).  Your instructions might need to be revised if the new SupportAssist v3.11.x installers are creating files and registry entries in new locations.

Hi DavG94:

I launched SupportAssist v3.10.4.18 today and it successfully updated to SupportAssist v3.11.4.19 on my Inspiron 5584, and I noticed that SupportAssist v3.11.4 is now listed at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs as the latest available update.

The old release notes <<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>.> for SA v3.4.10 (released 23-Nov-2021) say "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2. NOTE If you do not have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2, SupportAssist installs the latest Microsoft .NET Framework on your PC." ....

Dell SupportAssist v3_10_4 Minimum PC Requirements NET Framework 4_7_2 24 Jun 2022.png

.... while the new release notes <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> for SA v3.4.11 (released 23-Jun-2022) say "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET Core Runtime v5.0.14.  NOTE If you do not have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET Core Runtime v5.0.14, SupportAssist installs the latest Microsoft .NET Framework on your PC."

Dell SupportAssist v3_11_4 Minimum PC Requirements NET Core Runtime v5_0_14 24 Jun 2022.png

I currently have the 64-bit MS .NET (Core) Runtime v5.0.17 installed and my highest version of the "classic" (for Windows PCs only) MS .NET Framework is v4.8.4510.0, which might explain why my update to SupportAssist v3.11.4 went so smoothly.  See my 02-Jun-2022 instructions in crimsom's 17 R5, SupportAssist v3.10.4 Blue Screen on how to use the Asoft .NET Version Detector to find your installed .NET (Core) Runtime and .NET Frameworks versions. For some reason, Windows Update automatically installed KB5013354 [the 64-bit .NET (Core) Runtime v5.0.16] during my April 2022 Patch Tuesday updates, but I still have no idea why - as far as I know there was no software installed on my system back in April 2022 that required a .NET (Core) Runtime.

Win 10 Pro V21H2 Control Panel May 2022 PT Updates MS NET Runtime v5_0_17 13 May 2022.png

As you noted, the official download page for newer .NET (Core) implementations (a multi-platform standard that works on Windows, macOS, Linux, etc.) at https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet shows that support for the .NET (Core) Runtime v5.0.x ended on 10-May-2022 and that .NET (Core) Runtime v6.0.x is the now recommended version. Why Dell would ever release new SupportAssist v3.11.x installers that require an unsupported (and now insecure) version of .NET (Core) Runtime v5.0.x is beyond me.

Just an FYI that employee DELL-Nathalia M posted on 28-Jun-2022 in Admiral1989's  SupportAssist - Installation Failed Message that Dell is currently working on a fix for some of the recent SupportAssist installation errors (although I see her comments have been edited and now simply ask customers with a valid service warranty to start a live chat to request assistance).

Forum Moderator jbilinski also posted <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>. in Admiral1989's thread that "Dell TechHub replaces Dell Hardware Scan service and is needed to run the Hardware Scan panel" so that's another major change that's been introduced in SupportAssist v3.11.4.29, in addition to the new system requirement for the unsupported (and now insecure) .NET (Core) Runtime v5.0.x.

It would be helpful if users having problems installing/re-installing SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 with the latest .exe or .msi installer (or simply updating from SupportAssist v3.10.4.18 to v3.11.4.29 during a self-check for a program update) could include their Windows OS (with version and build shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications) and Dell computer model.  The majority of people reporting issues seem to have Win 11 and/or higher-end Alienware and XPS models that have specialized software like the Alienware Command Center (AWCC) and Dell Command client software.

I'm using an Inspiron 3881 desktop with Win 11 build 21H2 (22H2 preview was problematic, so I rolled back).

The SA install/reinstall problem I had (from v3.10.4.18) remains, and also made Dell Command Update UWA v4.4.0 to not work, and unable to install/reinstall.

I checked my .NET (Core) Runtime is already upgraded to v5.0.x

Hi Ling Kwa:

You started your own thread on 29-Jun-2022 at Dell Support Assist and Dell Update failed - Inspiron 3881 desktop with Win 11-21H2 and installation of SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 doesn't seem to be your only problem so I posted a few suggestions there.
