Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update Rolled Back to v5.5.4.16189

Has anyone having problems updating to Dell Update v4.8.0 noticed something similar to the issue I've described below?

The support page <here> for my Inspiron 5584 currently lists Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.8.0 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_0RCG0_WIN_4.8.0_A00.EXE, rel. 31-Jan-2023) and the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.5.16206 (Dell-SupportAssist-OS-Recovery-Plugin-for-Dell-Update_CYKG9_WIN_5.5.5.16206_A00.EXE, rel. 25-Jan-2023) as the recommended versions.

As of today neither Support Assist v3.13.2.14 or Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 are detecting these updates, but I just noticed something odd on my system.  Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 updated my Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update from v5.5.4.16189 to v5.5.5.16206 on 31-Jan-2023, and I confirmed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features that v5.5.5.16206 of the plugin installed correctly ...

... but when SupportAssist self-updated from v3.13.0.236 to v3.13.2.14 on 08-Feb-2023 it appears to have rolled back the plugin to the previous v5.5.4.16189.

... my Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1,  SupportAssist v3.13.2.14, and the blue "Check for Updates" button on my Inspiron 5584 support page still aren't detecting:

    • Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.8.0
    • Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.5.16206 (previously installed on 31-Jan-2023 but rolled back to v5.5.4.16189 on 08-Feb-2023 when SupportAssist self-updated to v3.13.2.14)

Problem fixed, although my solution might be a bit extreme for most users.

I uninstalled SupportAssist v3.13.2.14, Dell SupportAssist OS Remediation v5.5.5.16458 (a.k.a Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools / System Repair) and the outdated / rolled back Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin v5.5.4.16189 using Revo Uninstaller Free in Advanced (aggressive) mode. After re-booting I confirmed that My Dell v2.2.4.0 and Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 were working correctly, and Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 was finally able to detect and self-update to v4.8.0 (released 31-Jan-2023).

This is what I now see in Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and my Windows Services following the self-update to Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.8.0:

As an added bonus, the .DAT files on my hard drive are no longer incorrectly associated with SupportAssist v3.13.7.0 UWP APPx module as the default program and no longer display the SupportAssist icon (blue circle with white wrench) as the default icon for .DAT files in File Explorer - see my recent posts in LovejoyPeacemaker's 14-Mar-2023 SupportAssist, Taken Over File Associations.
    ________________________________________

Just note that before I started uninstalling any programs with Revo Uninstaller I disabled all Windows services related to the Dell Data Vault (see image below - my Dell SupportAssist, Dell SupportAssist Remediation and Dell TechHub services were already disabled), and when I ran Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 (which requires a running Dell Client Management Service) I was surprised to see that it was able to detect the v4.8.0 update. I didn't perform the self-update to v4.8.0 until after Revo Uninstaller had removed all my SupportAssist-related programs, but that initial test suggested that Dell Data Vault (DDV) was somehow preventing my Windows Universal v4.7.1 from detecting that a v4.8.0 program update (rel. 31-Jan-2023) was available.

    ________________________________________

At this point I don't intend to reinstall either SupportAssist v3.x, Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x (a.k.a Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools / System Repair) or the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin v5.x. I've had the Dell SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist Remediation services disabled for over two years so these programs couldn't launch at boot-up and don't really need any of these programs.

I'll continue to use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.x to check for available updates, and if I ever need to run a hardware diagnostic and can use Dell's F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) hardware diagnostics from my BIOS (see the instruction video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cfFECs5Qa0) or run my Windows 10 built-in hardware diagnostics at Settings | Update & Security | Troubleshoot | Additional Troubleshooters.

I don't trust Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery after my Inspiron 5584 failed to boot up in Aug 2020 and this recovery software would not launch, forcing me to perform a reset to factory condition (also see my 28-Jul-2021 post in Desmodus1984's Inspiron 5570 - SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Downloads But Not Installing about a some past and current bugs).  Since then I've been using Macrium Reflect Free v8.x imaging software to create the occasional full disk image in case I ever have to perform an emergency recovery, and as an extra precaution I've also enabled Windows System Restore on my Inspiron 5584 (see instructions <here> for Win 10 or <here> for Win 11 on the Windows Central site) that is normally disabled by default on both Win 10 and Win 11.

For some reason the image in my previous post isn't displayed correctly.   Here's a new image showing that my Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update was rolled back to v5.5.4.16189 when SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 was installed on 08-Feb-2023 .

    Hi Robert_Geier:

Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one seeing this glitch.

I'm not sure if this is connected, but there are currently three recent updates posted on the support page <here> for my Inspiron 5584 that aren't being detected by either SupportAssist v3.13.2, Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1, or the "Check for Updates" button on that support page:

    • Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.5.16206, rel. 25-Jan-2023 (previously installed by Dell Update on 31-Jan-2023, rolled back to v5.5.4.16189 on 08-Feb-2023 during my SupportAssist self-update as noted <above>)
    • Fusion Service v2.1.49.0, rel. 30-Jan-2023 (although My Dell v2.1.8.0 seems to be launching correctly with my current Fusion Service v2.1.31.0)
    • Dell Update Windows Universal Application v4.8.0, rel. 31-Jan-2023

I'm used to waiting 5 or 6 days before updates posted on my Inspiron 5584 support page are detected by SupportAssist or Dell Update, but a two week lag seems excessive. Support Assist v3.13.2 and Dell Update v4.7.1 are currently detecting one available update for a Realtek Memory Card Reader Driver v10.0.18362.31252 released in 2019 (see my first image <above>) that I've never bother installing since I purchased my laptop so I know these utilities able to detect older updates.

Things have gone from bad to worse, or have at least become more confusing. I ran 4 update checks with Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 within a 12-hour time span and got 4 different results.

    Check 1: February 14 at 10:05 PM

This detected a 231 MB update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16458. It was late so I closed Dell Update without attempting the install.

    Check 2: February 15 at 08:34 AM

This detected a 37 MB update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16206 (which I had previously installed on 02-Dec-2022 - see my 11-Feb-2023 image <above>), which installed successfully. However, Control Panel Programs | Programs and Features now reports that Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.5.16458 was installed.

    Check 3: February 15 at 9:03 AM

This detected a 194 MB update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16458, but when I tried to install the installation failed.

This last check was run after a system restart and did not detect any available updates for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16458, even though my Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update is still on the "rolled-back" v5.5.4.16189 (i.e., the older version that was supposedly installed on 08-Feb-2023 with SupportAssist v3.12.3.14).

    Hi Imacri,

The same thing happened to me. Dell Update installed the newest version of the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update (I didn't take note of the version number), and then when SupportAssist self-updated to v3.13.2.14, the Plugin rolled back to v5.5.4.16189.

Then today when I checked for updates on Dell Update, it found a 231 MB update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (again, I didn't note the version number). Since it was a critical update, I installed it, and it installed successfully, and then I restarted my computer. Now I too have Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.5.16458 listed under Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features. I didn't check Dell Update for any more updates, since I didn't think there would be any more after installing the OS Recovery Tools update. I will check again and let you know if any other updates are found.

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that my outdated Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 finally detected an available update for my Dell Inspiron 5583/5584 System BIOS v1.22.1 (rel. 14-Feb-2023), and a launch of My Dell v2.1.8 automatically updated my Fusion Service to the latest v2.2.14.0 (rel. 20-Feb-2023) last night at the same time that it updated My Dell to v2.2.4.

The bad news is that both Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 and SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 are still not detecting available updates for:

    • Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.5.16206 (rel. 25-Jan-2023) (previously installed by Dell Update on 31-Jan-2023, rolled back to v5.5.4.16189 on 08-Feb-2023 during my SupportAssist self-update as noted <above>)
    • Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.8.0 (rel. 31-Jan-2023)

I didn't actually use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 to download and install my BIOS v1.22.1 update (I always install BIOS updates manually per my 03-Dec-2022 post <here> since I think this is safer) so I'm still not 100% certain that my Dell Update v4.7.1 app is able to install available updates without throwing an error, but for now I have assume that some of my updates have gotten out-of-sync since my SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 update rolled back my Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update from v5.5.5.16206 to v5.5.4.16189 on 08-Feb-2023.

Dell still hasn't posted release notes for the latest SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs so they must suspect that something is wrong with this version. I also know of one user who reported that Dell is already trying (and failing) to push out a SupportAssist v3.13.7.0 update to their machine - see alienware17r4's 14-Feb-2023 post in their thread 17 R4, firmwaretpm.exe stopped working.

    Hi Imacri,

I launched Dell Update for Windows Universal today and it didn't detect any further updates.

I have a few questions about what you posted about My Dell. I had never used My Dell before. I didn't even know what it was (I still don't). Today I launched it and it updated to the latest version, along with Fusion Service. Settings | Apps and Control Panel | Programs both say I have Fusion Service v2.2.14.0, 126 MB installed on 3/1/2023, but there is no listing for My Dell. How do I find out the version of My Dell? Settings | Apps just has a My Dell (what I think is an APPx module) listed - v2.2.4.0, 2.49 MB installed on 2/28/2023.

Also, there doesn't seem to be much to My Dell, and I am wondering if it installed correctly. A window for SupportAssist was open while it was installing (asking for feedback on SupportAssist) and I closed it and shortly afterward, My Dell finished installing the latest version. Did I interrupt the installation process by closing SupportAssist? Did My Dell need SupportAssist in order to update?

And what exactly is Fusion Service? Thanks for your help.

    Hi RedheadedCelt:

I rarely use the My Dell app, but it's a quick way to look up your Service Tag and warranty information (which you can also do in SupportAssist) and the interface includes a link to Documents tab of the support page for your Dell computer model so you can quickly access your service manual. See the My Dell support page <here> that includes images of the interface. My Dell is pre-loaded on most newer Dell home computers but it's a Windows Universal Platform (UWP) app that's available on the Microsoft Store, so it will be listed at Settings | Apps | Apps and Features rather than Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features if it's installed.

To see the version number of My Dell click the (very small) About link at the bottom-right corner of the interface - I currently have My Dell v2.2.4.0.  This is the same version number listed at Settings | Apps | Apps and Features (select My Dell and click on the Advanced Options link to see the version number).

My Dell v2_2_4 About Link 01 Mar 2023.png

My Dell v2_2_4 About My Dell Version 01 Mar 2023.png

The description of the latest Fusion Service v2.2.14.0 (rel. 20-Feb-2023) on the support page <here> for your Inspiron 3583 says:

"This package contains the Fusion Service for the My Dell and My Alienware applications. The My Dell and My Alienware applications provide access to features such as self-help articles, settings, accessories, software, and SupportAssist. The Dell Fusion Service provides services for the My Dell and My Alienware to enable these features...The Fusion Service is needed for My Dell and My Alienware 1.8 or later."

As far as I know the My Dell app won't run unless its companion Fusion Service is installed (check at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features for your current version). Fusion Service used to be called "My Dell Fusion Service" and as far as I know it isn't needed for any other Dell app except My Dell. The image below shows I have the current Fusion Service v2.2.14.0.

    Hi RedheadedCelt:

What version of Dell Update for Windows Universal are you currently using on your Inspiron 3583 / Win 11 Home laptop, and what updates are still pending that you believe should be detected by this app?

For example, when I go to the Overview tab of my Inspiron 5584 support page and enter my unique Service Tag, the Downloads & Drivers tab recommends four recently released updates for my system. As I noted <above>, I have already installed the latest Fusion Service v2.2.14.0 and Dell Inspiron 5583 / 5584 System BIOS v1.22.1, but my Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1,  SupportAssist v3.13.2.14, and the blue "Check for Updates" button on my Inspiron 5584 support page still aren't detecting:

    • Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.8.0
    • Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.5.16206 (previously installed on 31-Jan-2023 but rolled back to v5.5.4.16189 on 08-Feb-2023 when SupportAssist self-updated to v3.13.2.14)
